I have some elephant ears which I brought from FL to AR and do not know if they should be dug in the wintertime or if a heavy layer of mulch would protect them. I know they do die down in the winter in FL but always come back.
To Dig or Not to Dig Elephant Ears
It depends on which elephant ears you have (a picture would help) and which zone you're in now.
Sorry, don't have pictures, however, these do not seem to have the "bulbs" that some do. When they are dug up, there are only roots. Seems that since there are only roots, it would be hard to overwinter them if dug up.
Well it seems as if you answered your own question. If you can't dig them, you can't dig them. Mulch 'em heavily, say a little prayer, do a little dance and cross your fingers :)
I gave some to my neighbor in AR and they had asked me about digging them up. If mine die, I can always bring more back from FL, as each year they bloom and throw out loads of seed. I hate to give the neighbors something that will just die every year, but would be happy to replace theirs, too!
