With winter coming I believe I made the mistake of starting a project way to late. Long story short I dug up some plants to move someplace else and I recently bought bulbs to plant, I don't see me having time to do this. Can I store these plants and bulbs over winter? I'm pretty sure it's possible, I just don't know how or where to store them at?
Winter?
Can you put them in containers for the winter? If you do(in your zone) you might want to pile some mulch on and around the containers. I've hadn't had any luck holding on to bulbs over the winter without them drying out. Maybe someone has.
Is it too late to plant them outside? For my area that is, it's been pretty cold lately.
Did you have your first frost yet? For bulbs it wouldn't be too late unless it constantly below freezing already. For the perennials, it might be too late in your zone.
As long as the ground hasn't frozen yet - which it certainly hasn't in your area, not even here - you should plant your bulbs. Might as well write them off otherwise, as any other means to keep them over (e.g. potting up and keeping in a cold room or forcing them) would take just as much time.
Same for the perennials you dug up... just stick them in the ground somewhere, even if it is not the final place for them. Putting them in pots and buring the pots up to the rim or mulching them or whatever you had in mind, would take just as much time as sticking them back in the ground.
In other words, no, it's not too late to do these things, if you have to.
I agree--just get them in the ground instead of trying to pot them. Wouldn't it be nice if handyman services did this--there are times when I'd gladly pay a small fee for someone else to move things around.
