Yes it seems to be very effective, but I would like to have both.

Quoting lepfarmer:Here's a pic I snapped in the yard a couple of days ago of a mating pair of Sleepy Oranges (Abaeis nicippe). What makes it interesting is that the male (on the left) is a winter form while the female (on the right) is a typical summer form.

lep .......... I'm glad to know that. I had some orange ones in my yard the other day and didn't know what that color was. I still have some yellows here too.
Sheila........ Here I am 'begging' again. Do you have enought to send me a start of the Eupatorium wrightii? I'm a sucker for anything that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

I need help. (NO comments! LOL) SOMEWHERE on one of the threads I was on, I promised SOMEONE I would snatch some solid green spider/airplane starts for them, but have lost my list and don't remember who it was! If it is you, or you know who it was, please d-mail me. I have them and would like to send to the person who wanted them. Sometimes I am such a ditz...... whatta ya mean SOMETIMES????? sheesh
Crit
Sooo sorry....I checked the name tag and it is the A. herbacea. It would have been from you or the Botanic Garden I bet. If you don't have this one you can still have seeds. It is not a real good draw for the butterflies and doesn't grow as fast as the A. havaense either. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/133125/
Crit...I haven't forgotten you and the W TX Mistflower. It got pretty cold here and I got lazy. I have the seeds collected now and will dig plants tomorrow and mail. I will add some extra items for you too.
Sheila, I gave you the A. herbacea, we will have to get the A. wrightii some other way, I guess.
Great photo of the Sleepy Orange!
Hey Dale...I led a trip out to Resaca de la Palma - there is a wooden boardwalk/bridge that has a massive amount of senna growing on both sides - lots of Boisduval's Yellows there!

Dale....failed to mention I was glad the sale at TDG was a success. I bet you had the crowd due to the great article "that guy" wrote!
Yes i am sure of it too.
STILL jealous up here in the north!
I chased some butterfly yesterday, I think it was probably a buckeye, but I never got a clear view of it. It's warm this week, so maybe one last sighting is possible.
aww, isn't that a beautiful site!
That is gorgeous Peg!!!
excellent pic
Awesome photo Peg!!! And here I was all excited today because I saw one....ONE...Question Mark :o)

I've read the phrase butterfly brew and would love to make one of my own. What does this brew consist of?? Any recipies and instructions?? I would love to see that many butterfly congregated sipping brew.
No sweat on the starts Sheila. I understand .... I hate getting cold too.
Awesome pic Peg...... I am so jealous of the b'flys you get there.
Peg!!! That is a beautiful site....I never had that many on mine before. I don't currently have any mixed up but got to go to liquor store tomorrow for a G Stout beer!!
Sorry Roly.....the brew is here....look for beckygardeners third post.

Ah...another convert to butterfly brew :o)
The fall season is our peak butterfly season and I've been making the butterfly brew a couple of times a week. Our local NBC (National Butterfly Park) has lots of bait logs and each time I go out there I add fresh brew to them.
Here's a link to the recipe on my garden diary as well as photos of butterflies enjoying it, scat, upchuck, salt/minerals, puddles and other stuff.

Hey TPP remember when I asked what scat was? Too funny! I wonder if I put out some llama poo if it will attract them? What do you think?
I just checked your recipe for butterfly brew, I have been using 3-4 lbs. of bannanas instead of 10 lbs., it did seem like the brew has more appeal when I use the 4 lbs. as it is thicker and stays put instead of running off the log. Maybe I need to try your recipe. Enjoyed you link by the way.
Hey all, the Pipevine won't stop laying her eggs and we are soon going to get a frost here. I harvested some to raise to chrysalis to hold over for next year, I would like to take them all, but I am sure there are at least 100 out there. And since the Dutchman's pipe has stopped growing I know I will not have enough to feed all of them. Guess the eggs that hit with the frost will just die?
Peg:
Yep, the eggs and larvae will die. This is natural selection at work. It may sound cold, but you can't worry about it. It's a perfectly natural process.
I seldom mix up a "brew". Usually I just put out rotten bananas and leave it at that and they get covered. Just too lazy, most of the time. Now, when I go on a collecting trip somewhere and take bait traps along with me (like I will if I go to the Rio Grande Valley next week), then I sometimes mix up a brew.

Thanks Dale for your input.
Peg...I bet if you put some of the Llhama poo in a dish and re-hydrated it, it might. As for me, I have enough dog, cat, possum, and squirrel poo the natural way.
I'm going to try the llhama poo..ummmm, ummmmmmmmmmmmm, good!
Llamo poo...who'da ever thunk we'd be discussing poo! Might work - we get butterflies on fresh cow poo.
Yes, Peg - I remember the scat question too :o)
Have never had a butterfly on dog poo - and my dogs leave plenty in the back yard. Have seen a couple on coyote poo out at the ranch though - but not as many as when I re-hydrate owl pellets. There are also the rare times when Dad will bring in a deer blind for repairs and to clean it out. He'll use the water hose to spray out the inside (why you ask? because someone - not mentioning names - will leave a window cracked open for owls to nest) and clean all the gunk out - there will be hundreds of blues - ceranaus and reakirt's - gathered on the gravel driveway sipping up all that nasty washoff!!!
By the way - he put locks on all his deer blinds this year!!! I never fessed up to leaving the windows opened and would blame it on the illegal aliens crossing our land!!!
~ Cat
Okay Cat, THAT is so funny. You leave the deer blind open so the owls can nest so your butterflies can puddle. Nice. Most people just mix up brew or plant flowers or something. Not you, YOU have commitment!
I had never seen owl babies, those are amazing!!
Oh my ..... ya'll are just a HOOT! lol get it HOOT, owl babies. oh well, I tried. I thought it was funny! :-)
I was on a thread and we were talking about different types of recycle items to start plants in. Someone mentioned yogurt containers. Anyone remember that or where it was? Thanks!
Georgeous ZLT Skipper! Is that the W TX Mistflower it's on?
Yes :o) It's always a big hit with all the butterflies. Trouble is it gets full of Queens most times.
Makes us want to say, "Will all the Queen fly up two feet and stay there!" We want to see what other butterflies are left :o)
Even a wee little Mimosa Yellow hiding out in the shade on a leaf.

Just love seeing those butterflies that I don't have here, Cat. That Zilpa is very interesting.
owl pic and subsequent comments...very good ...lol
This is off track of butterflies, but thought I'd give you all a chance too.
Purple Wander Jew ....... last chance if anyone wants starts of this. It is going to be 32 or below for several nights starting Saturday. I will be letting these little babies die off if no one wants them. If you are interested, please d-mail me.
Crit
I love the Buckeyes.
