What are you working on #3

Thomaston, CT

I'd love a round birdhouse....you may send a reject one if you wish, Bill! I can send a watercolor. Yep, I'd like to see Victor's play dough action figures before they're confiscated by the postmaster!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

we would be reading about him the paper!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Polly, good for you on the iris seeds. I have not tried them from seed, but I've pretty much given up on TB iris because of so many problems with borers. Will have to eventually start a collection of sibs and Jap iris.

Well, Bill, you may not be young (don't really know, you're probably younger than I am), and I don't know about nimble, but you're definitely strong.

How about play dough gnomes, Victor? LOL!

We have to plant our iris seeds from this year's crosses. DH was playing with leaves today.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I have this year's and last years crosses for my daylily seeds. I will be playing with leaves this weekend.

Wonderful shapes Bill

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

love that Bill.... you are good

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Bill you are getting to be quite the expert with the birdbaths too. I just love them, they look so natural and blend so nicely with all your gorgeous rock walls.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Great job, Bill!

Thomaston, CT

Really nice....they fit right in with your property! My vertical granite came from the scrap pile in the cemetery....

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

What an idea Marilyn! I will have to check out our local cemeteries. I do recall seeing a pile in one of them.

Thomaston, CT

You're welcome, Polly. My son used to work in our cemetery summers when he was in high school & college, so we have several pieces from ours.

Nice Bill!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Very nice, Bill. Looks like you could make a really huge mushroom that way, too. That would also look nice. Can never have too many mushrooms or birdbaths. Well,.......maybe I could be wrong on that. Too many would get tacky looking.

Marilyn, what a great idea for getting vertical granite.

Bill, I'm telling you, you can open your own shop.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hope they had no writing on them, Marilyn!!!

Thomaston, CT

LOL......not that I could see!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

that is what i was thinking victor :) thx everyone

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Weird because I saw an old cemetary today and many of the headstones were knocked over.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Now thats sad....makes me P.O.d that people have no respect for the dead. :(

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Sometimes the older cemeteries just have headstones that fall over, though.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Planted all the hellebores.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

How many new hellebores did you get Victor?

That one I have, the Blue Lady cross, is throwing tons of seedlings each year.

Thomaston, CT

That's great, Polly. I only have 2 varieties, but neither has babies :(

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

12 Sunshine Strain and four specimen.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Great Victor! Did you get them directly from Barry? He's a hoot.

Marilyn, mine did not for maybe 4 years, and now each year they throw tons. Look at the Lady strains, all of them are good seeders, so far.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No - Deer Resistant Plants.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Nice selection there. Were they nice size?

I once bought a hellebore package from Barry @ Sunshine. We corresponded for sometime, and that guy is just crazy hilarious. I bought 100 of the Sunshine strain. They were 1.00 each. When I received them they all fit in a padded envelope. There turned out to be 110, and every single one did well, and they were just beautiful. But when I saw that little padded package with 100 hellebores, eek. And hellebore babies can't be handled by the meristem, they are very fragile, so I had to hold all of them by the little leaf they had to plant them.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Hellebore seedlings for a dollar each? Oh, I'd be in hellebore heaven!!!!! I just love them, and they really make a wonderful ground cover. Great for naturalizing.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I doubt Barry is selling them for much more now, Karen. You have to email him, though, as that's how he does business.

I'd be more than happy to send you some babies in the spring. Mine are all from the Lady series, though. I sold all the Sunshine ones I think. I started out with Blue Lady, Red Lady, and Metallic Blue Lady, and they all had numerous affairs, obviously.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

These were big - 5 inch pots. I am impatient! The specimen ones were 3 inch. He gets his Sunshine from Barry. Yes, Barry is a pisser. I have emailed with him many times and have bought stuff directly from him. I get email deals from him. I interviewed him for my hellebore article.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Polly. Will have to contact him, but will wait till spring. Right now I just don't have the money to buy anything. Would love some from you if you don't mind. I could trade you some daylilies if you want some. I have hundreds!!!!!

Karen

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Sounds good, Karen!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks everyone .The Sunshine site is added to my favorites.
I need a ton of Cyclamin and helebores for the new Giant Hosta garden.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

You're welcome, of course, to some hellebores too Jo, unless you're looking for something special. The ones I have, the Lady strains get very large, though, maybe 24" X 18 ".

That place Victor got his from has a nice selection.

Here's another great source for hellebores. Judith, the owner is the most helpful vendor I've ever worked with.

Good for you Victor. Looking forward to some pics of your new residents. I like that site you bought yours from. Anything Bambi resistant is a good thing. Will some of your nice chunky plants have a bloom or two next spring Victor? I am impatient too, and after waiting for many years to see my first hellebore I think I will go with larger plants when I purchase for under the dogwood tree I hope to plant in the spring when the open area out front gets topped off and final grading is done.
I have a question for you all. Do the named varieties set seed or just spread by runners?

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

The x hybridus sets seeds readily, but you're not going to get them true to the mother plant. A lot of others are not good seeders, that's why they are so expensive, although with tissue culture now they should be getting cheaper.

I've done a few crosses myself, it's tons of fun. I think Victor has one of mine.

I've never seen ones that run.

Thomaston, CT

Thanks, for the sources, Polly....I've bookmarked them for next spring.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

You're welcome. I'm in the market for a double. They look so lovely. Be advised if you are going to buy any from Sunshine, it's a different type of buying experience.
