Hicks Yew shrub

Schenectady, NY

I have a large hick yew in front of my front porch. I just purchased this property. The question is, It is late October. The shrub has grown outward and is covering approx. 2/3 of a small concrete walkway across the lawn. I wnat to cut it back to make the sidewalk functional, but it looks like if I do it will look ugly. Exposing the stick trunks with no or insufficient cover. How long will it take to grow back so it looks fully covered? and when is the best time to do this.? Thank Yew (Hah Ha)

flowAjen linked good information. Even though it is advised to wait till spring Yew is very forgiving and recovers rapidly. If I had a shrub obscuring a walkway I would prune it any time to give access. l Yews especially will be okay but may not look good for awhile. Fear not when dealing with yews. They are amazingly resilient.

Yes, yews are probably the most forviging plant to prune back, because they have thousands of 'latent' buds underneath the bark. These buds are like insurance policies for the plant. When pruned and a bit of sun hits the bark, womp, there are suddenly four or five new shoots.

Have some fun with your pruners! lol
