Small Bushes Needed for Northern Midwest Area

Elgin, IL

I now have some currant bushes that have seen better days. They've gotten too tall and too large for the bed they're in. I would like to replace them with smaller bushes (3ft-4ft) that aren't as unruly as the currant bushes. I live in a suburb of Chicago. I really don't want evergreens. I prefer something that is dark green and would do well in partial shade. They will be in a flower bed that is about 3 ft deep. I have no idea of what I should pick. Any ideas?

Hydrangea?

I'll second that - particularly "Annabelle." This is mine from this year -- 3 foot tall, partial shade, beautiful white balls that can stand through the season - turning green - Dax

Thanks for the suggestion! I love them and didn't even think of them. Beautiful, Dax!

Puppypat, when you say you don't want evergreens do you mean conifers and broadleaf? Within the broadleaf category are the familiar rhodys and azaleas but also some not so familiar. Leucothoe in various forms is one I like alot for an area like yours.
