This is my first year starting them from seed, also. These seeds need a 7 day period of stratification. You can either: put them in the fridge in a ziplock baggie, planted with some damp peat soil, for this period..or winter sow them (I am trying this method).
After stratification, they germinate in 14-60 days at 60-86* F. Not all of the seeds come up at once. Good luck :)

I started a flat of blackberry lily and I agree with what Trish said. I would however leave them in the fridge for 2 or 3 weeks. BTW I just left the tray in the house.

I've had good luck with just planting them in a container, cover the seed with 1/4 inch of planting medium, keep moist, keep covered until one sprouts. They germinate in about 1 month. Dicentra is right they don't all germinate at once. But are pretty fast growers once most are sprouted. Last year the ones I planted in the spring from seed, bloomed in the fall.

I had always heard that you had to cold stratify Blackberry Lily seeds too. I did an experiment one year whereby I grew some that were cold stratified and some that weren't- the ones that WEREN'T cold-treated germinated sooner, and the plants were larger and healthier. I just plant them in Gro-mix in a two inch pot and they sprout within a week or two.

Try it both ways and see what ~you~ think!

I wish someone would post a picture of the blackberry lily. I have never heard of this plant until I got on DG. I have seen it mentioned a number of times.

I have blackberry lillies. Each year, I have more than the year before. I GUESS they are growing from the seeds just falling on the ground. They don't SEEM to be spreading by the underground rhizome. They are actually an iris, not a lily. I will TRY to post a photo in the photo section.
