Identify this flower please.

Could you identify this flower please.
It appeared in our garden a few years ago and is so prolific in its self seeding it has now appears all over it.
I was told it is a marigold, but I am not so sure as its leaves and seeds are not like those of the marigolds I recognise.

chinabitbit,
Following your suggestion, I have looked up pictures of the Strawflower but it is definitely not one of them.
Thanks anyway,

Here is a closer photo which includes the flower, a developing seed head, and a mature seed head. The seeds are actually like little (3mm), rock-hard, dried-out caterpillars to describe them. The plants grow about 18" tall and 1 foot across and would be described as straggely I suppose.

Agree with ecrane3. It is Calendula.
Nice close up pic.

Following your advice I have found a reference on Wiki which shows an old illustration of the Calendula ( pot marigold )complete with seeds, seed heads and flower parts etc and my plant is identical. It seems the flowers make good wine amongst other potions. Roll on next season.

Thank you both for your help.

PeterPlanter: The flower you can't identify is a calendula. The flowers form into many, many seeds so that the flowers will come up every year. I'm in Zone 3 where the temperature dips to 40 degrees below zero and the seeds survive and come up each spring.

I think he knows that by now, the thread is from last year.

Pot Marigold are eaten in Salads too, you pick the lovely petals off the flower heads and drop them over your bowl of Salad, tasty, a sort of nippy pepper taste.

Wow! Stunning picture flowAjen! You are growing a very pretty plant peterplanter. Probably planted by the birds. Hope it came back for you this year.
