Rooting Avocado Seeds

Deland, FL & Hot Spr, AR

I brought three avocado seeds back from California and want to root them. In looking online I found several different methods: One said to root in a glass of water in the sun and another said to root in a glass of water put in a cabinet out of the sun, while another says you can root in soil. I'm confused! Since I have three seeds, perhaps I could use all three methods!

we used to stick 3 toothpics or straightpins about half way down the seed, evenly spaced around the seed so that the pins would rest on the rim of a glass and keep the bottom half of the seed in water. we usually set it on a window sill inside where it got lots of light and they always grew. these were fresh seeds and still somewhat soft. i don't know how long you're seeds have been drying or if it even makes a difference but give it a try. if i remember right it didn't take very long and the seed will split from the top down to let the sprout out. let us know it turns out.

A good friend of mine grew one for herself and one for me. I believe she planted them in regular potting soil. However, they can't be too difficult to grow because this year she had one grow out of her compost pile and said it's beautiful and healthy.

I think they are pretty easy, too. Since I saw three ways to grow them, they must like just about any growing medium -- now the compost one is another! I don't think I will try that one, though. LOL
