Hi, I am an old member but new at posting but i have a question about hollyhocks. I just won some hollyhocks...and i am wondering if it is too late to put them in the ground? I want them to start next year...but dont want to wait till next year to plant them...lol. I figure, since they reseed themselves, the seeds go through the winter months. Any suggestions? I'm in a 4/5 zone area. thanks, Christine
Is it too late for hollyhocks?
You're right, hollyhocks do self-sow; therefore, fall planting is a good way to go. It's my preferred method. When the seeds are planted in the fall, they will come up when conditions are optimal for them so you don't have to guess when it will be the right time to plant in the spring. I always just leave seed heads on many of my flowers in the fall so they will self-sow. I get lots of freebies that way--always plenty for me and lots to share with friends.
Thanks so much for your input. That is what I intend to do once my plants start flowering and getting seed heads. Let them self sow their lil hearts out. I will gather some of the heads, for trading and such. I am off to find the perfect location for my seeds now. Thanks again. Hope all is well in Missouri. Christine
