Its time to plant Garlic

Plantersville, TX(Zone 9a)

I am going to plant my garlic today. Is anyone else doing the same? This is a first time for me, & I don't know if it will sprout for Dec. or wait all winter to sprout in the Spring.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Plant it now and it should sprout in a couple of weeks. It'll survive any cold weather you might get and then be ready to harvest in late spring/early summer. I'm planting mine this week at some point in time.

I was told to plant the garlic cloves pointed side up.

That would be best.
Otherwise, they'll have their roots pointed upwards!

Yes, pointed end up as the roots develop out of the other end. You also only need to plant them about an inch deep in nice, rich soil.

Where is a good place to buy garlic to plant. I saw at Botanical Gardens that 2 bulbs are 7.50. Is this the usual price. Because I bought some at the grocery store for 50 cents/

If I ever buy any garlic in the future to grow, I'm getting it from Gourmet Garlic. They're a Texas company.

stephanietx. Do you have the website to Gourmet Garlic?

It's posted above. I'd repost it but I'm at work and can't do that right now.

Sorry, I see it now.

I'm so glad I read this. I been forgetting to plant mine!!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

behillman, you can grow the "grocery store" garlic if you like. It is normally California White, I've grown it for years. And yes, I look forward to the grocery store prices dropping this time of year for garlic, great seed stock!

Set your cloves about 4" apart with the tips just under the soil. You'll love growing such an easy crop as garlic.

You're right my garlic always sprouts on me. I live in zone 4 where I can grow some varieties of garlic. Do you think I can grow grocery store garlic in Vermont?

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

I bet you could, Helen. It would certainly be worth a try, garlic is very hardy. Friends of mine grow it in Canada and it winters over under snow for months.

Thanks for all the information. One more question. Am I suppose to peel off the paper on the cloves before I bury it in the soil?

Denver, United States

Best not to do so, behillman. Doing so runs the risk of bruising or even cutting the clove with a fingernail and thereby greatly increasing the risk of disease. No small farm garlic growers do this, nor does Mother Nature. If the cloves are fresh and of good stock (and you are not relying on stuff that's been lying about in a grocery chain's stock for a long time), they'll take care of themselves; they are tuff buggers!
