My two indoor maidenhair fern plants have been consistently dying since I bought them in July. In both pots, the few branches that still remain look dry and black (no longer healthy brown like before), there has been no new growth in the past month or so, and all the remaining leaves curl up and scorch out - even the few, really rare ones that manage to grow. I water my plants with warm tap water (hard water, I think) every other day, and pour water in the pebble tray once or twice a week to raise humidity around the plants. I fed it with Miracle Grow slow-release plant food once, but then the leaves started to scorch out. I later read that the dosage was too strong, and that too much fertilizer is not good for these gentle things. They get very filtered sunlight through the curtains.
To add to things, I've been noticing a whitish-yellowish crystalline coating on the outside of one of the pots. I've tried scrubbing it off a few times, but that stuff keeping coming back in just a few days. I used to think it's the minerals from the water or the plant food leeching out of the terracotta pot, but I'm not so sure anymore.Then there's also white bugs floating in the tray water, and some on the top of the soil. They are so tiny, I hadn't even noticed them before. Even now I can't tell the structure of these bugs (will attach pics). I clean out the water every two weeks though. I'm really sad looking at my plants. Where am I going wrong? Is there anything I can do to make them healthy again? Thank you in advance.
Maidenhair fern plants dying!!! Please help!!
Pruant: I feel your pain. Maidenhair ferns can be difficult to grow. The white bugs that you see sounds like mealy bugs. They were probably on the plant when you bought it.
I would cut them way back and they should sprout out again. When you cut them back, use your sink sprayer and wash the entire plant with lukewarm water. At the first sign of the little white devils, take a Q-tip that has been dipped in regular alcohol (rubbing) and just touch the area where you see the white spots. This will kill them. You can not spray maidenhairs with any insecticide. Also try not using any fertilizer.
Hope this helps.
BSD, thank you so much for your tips. You are right, I do need to cut back the stems back all the way. There is no other way those branches are going to get any healthier.
Just another question - do you have any idea if the bugs could be due to over-watering? I do water it every other day, but I make sure not to have the bottom of the pot standing in water all the time ... How often do you suggest I water it? Thanks so much again.

Here's a site with lots of good info on growing maidenhair ferns.

Thank you, NatureLover1950!!
No, the bugs are not from overwatering. However, the moist enviroment is heaven for them and they will therefore multiply. They were probably on your plant when you bought it. Since you mentioned they were in the soil, I would repot both plants..After you cut it back,take the entire plant and give it a good bath under fast running water. Destroy the old soil and if you are going to use the same pots wash it good in a solution of clorox and water.
Nature Lovers info is great. I learned alot. Try adding the limestone that they mentioned to your potting mix. It sounds like you were doing everything right. Mealy bugs suck the nutrients out of plants. They are bad little critters. Good luck with your plants !!
BSD: Thanks very much again for your reply and advice. Will do as you suggested...
You're very welcome for the info pruant. You can tell I ran into some problems keeping maidenhair ferns alive too :-}
