Tomato nice on top with lots of fruit, hideous on bottom

Atlanta, GA

This tomato plant I started from seed has been a very interesting project. In the heat, it was lovely, full and green with NO blossoms or fruit. Now, when it is cooling down, it is horrible with lots of fruit and blossoms. The top is lovely and green and the bottoms stalks are withered and brown, and can be pulled off of the stems with ease. It is still putting out more fruit every day.

What is wrong with it?

Pictures would help.

my guess is you should just remove the dead foliage and let the plant focus on the healthy parts of it. My tomatoes have dead branches at the bottom too, they don't get the sun anymore and die. I feel like its normal.

I asked the same question when I was an UBERnewbie. Sounds pretty normal to me, too.
