Is it safe to move perennials in October (zone 6)?

West Norriton, PA(Zone 6b)

I need to move several perennials, is it safe to move them in October? I've looked at several articles, postings, sites and the general consensus is ... yes, no, maybe!?!?

I also have several perennials I started from cuttings this summer. Is it safe to plant the cuttings in the garden now or should I just over winter them in the garage?

I garden in zone 6b.

If your cuttings are still small I'd definitely overwinter them and plant them in the spring. For the other plants, now that we're already into October it's probably getting a little late. If you need to move them now or else you're going to lose them anyway then you have nothing to lose by trying to move them, but if you've got some flexibility on time spring that would probably be better. You can move things in the fall, but it would have been better to do it earlier so the plants had more time to get themselves established before you get cold weather. But to some extent it will depend on what it is you want to move--while your timing is a little later than ideal, there may be some things that you'd still be OK to move now. So if you can post a list of the things you want to move someone might be able to give you some better advice.

Thanks ecrane3 -- I checked in with the mid-atlantic gang, they all had great advise. Many of the responders are in my zone and move plants in late October. I think for the new ones I grew from cuttings will be over wintered in my uninsulated garage.

I agree with the previous poster. Last year, I tried to take cutting that had sprouted during the summer and plant them in early October and none survived. I'm in zone 5, which is different, but still...better safe than sorry.
