What's Happening in your neck of the woods?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Oh dear! I didnt hear the weather forecast and after I read your note I looked out the window and it was raining. So I took the car in for cleaning but left the dogs at home. Walked home, should have taken the dogs - rain had stopped - but figured I would take them when I went to get the car. Maybe not. Now almost an hour later it is snowing and blowing! Oh well who knows what it will be doing an hour from now!

Victoria Harbour, ON

OMG, you do have SNOW??? would you consider this being early???

Oh no, I shouldn't have posted snow, made it happen..lol

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

No Betty this is not early- lots of years we have snow earlier but it generally does not last very long. Serious snow is not usually until into November, sometimes later.Pic at 11AM Oct 15 - front yard.

Looks so pretty, but oh it's just not time yet!

st.george, NB(Zone 5a)

The snow does look pretty and I guess nothing we do or say is going to change when we get it. LOTS of rain here and high winds. Not many leaves left on the trees after today.
I have a mess in my yard - something got into the bird feeders and they are all on the ground - one is missing completely and 2 fences knocked down. Did think it was a raccoon but with the fences down I am starting to think I may have a bear hanging around. Lots of damage anyway - if the rain ever stops I can get out and see what else it did. For now the birds will have to eat whatever is left in the ground.
Going shopping tomorrow - time for a winter jacket now I guess.
Have a good weekend everyone.

Snows all gone but still cool and windy

Tomorrow is Blessing of the Animals so we will all be going to church! Am sorry I didnt get the dogs g roomed this week, they have not had a bath since July and are getting a bit smelly and need trims! I will brush them out tonight and maybe trim their feet. Not up to bathing them myself!

Freedom, a little 8 year old sheltie I board occasionally is coming tonight for 2 weeks.

SHYZA .. that snow looks so daunting .. glad it LEFT !! I don't really want to hear the sound of a snowblower for a long while yet !!

Lorna's Dad had his cardiac catheterization done last evening .. both stents in place are in good working order and it is felt he MAY need a double bypass, however, the doc who would yea or nay that, does not work weekends .. soooo .. it's wait and see until Monday.
Her Dad is quite chipper and feeling fine ..

Helped build (put together/decipher) a microwave stand last evening, Lorna has the patience for it, and the skill sets, I am totally not an IKEA typa person !!
As it is, the whole thing is constructed, BUT, the runners included in the packaging for the drawer may be incorrect :(

Hope everyone has a great day ^_^
Good luck with jacket shopping Laurie.
Carol, the Blessing of the Animals happened last weekend here. Had some great pics in the local paper from the event.

We went to church this morning - the annual Blessing Of The Animals.
My boarder Freedom was a bit stressed but lay quietly in the pew the whole time.
The first animal to be blessed is always the police horse. New horse this year named Kalgary.

Awwwwwwwww ... nice way to start my day .. great pics Carol
Kind of odd how the animals do tend to behave when at these ceremonies .. have been to a few over the years.

Nothing too earth shattering happening here .. Laurie .. we have a broken composter and its strewn contents to deal with from an overnight raid by Mr (or Ms) Bear .. have heard we have Racoons out this way, but none seem to be on our property .. that we KNOW of ..

Furnace has run all night .. window company arrives tomorrow to put in the 4 new windows, am thinking I am going to have to leave and take the dogs with me as the doors will be opening and closing, as will the gates .. sooooo .. better safe than sorry ..

Off to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee

Evening all, home from taking mom & step-father Jim to Buffalo, you know how sometimes you ask someone, how are you feeling, general conversation and they go one for 2 days..well, don't ask me how it went, you just don't have enough time tonight to listen..let's just say I'm so glad to be home, have had a hot bath and off to watch a movie, even put one of the t.v. turkey dinners I made up in micro, going to eat and off to bed, put this weekend behind me..lol..

"M" so glad that Lorna's dad is doing better..love the photo's of the pansies..amazing how much cold they can take

Carole, not sure what weather we've had while I've been away but you cannot see the ground for yellow leaves..yikes, a lot of work ahead of me or maybe I'll just leave it as is until spring!

Freedom is adorable...I've never heard of dog blessing here in our churches..what a nice thing to do.
All your snow gone?

Must be window time, seems we're all getting windows installed..thought maybe Bernie would have come put the trim on the wndows he put in last weekend so I can get the curtains up but not..let's hope this week or I'll be hanging curtains minus the trim..

My girlfriend Ann dropped in for 1 second, actually didn't even come in the house, her husband had his 1st chemo and is doing poorly, I wanted to drive her home but she said she needed to clear her head...when saying your prayers tonight if you could include one for them it would be much appreciated!

Quick trip to Lethbridge and back today to pick up a couple of dogs from Montana.
They are part of a group of about 75 dogs whose owner was shot and killed late in Sept.( http://www.greatfallstribune.com/article/20100928/NEWS01/9280303/Man+fatally+sho) Helena Humane society took them over, had them all spayed/neutered , cleaned up ( fleas and worms of course) and then sent groups of them off to other shelters, Montana Sheltie rescue took 13 and several other sheltie rescue groups in the western USA groups have been taking those dogs. The dogs are actually sheltie/pomeranian cross. I volunteered to take 2 and another nearby rescue 1-2 because we are pretty close to where the dogs were near Kallispell. And there was a recent hoarding incident in Ontario that involved 22 shelties , Sheltie rescue there took them on and Michigan Sheltie took 5 of that lot. I figured I couldnt take the Ontario dogs so helped Montana instead. The dogs were transported in 3 sections- Kallispell to Shelby to Lethbridge and then to Calgary.
They are pretty cute dogs but have always lived outside, never had a coller/leash on but most of them are remarkably friendly. The one I am fostering is a gret licker and then rolls on his back to ask for belly scratches.
The other we have is a bit shy but will come round. Mine is 2, the other is 4 years old. Suggested names are Montana or Tripp for one, Journey for the other.

OMG aren't they lovely, how very tragic..how on earth do you do it?
Falling asleep here but will read the line in the a.m.

WB Betty .. gotta so dislike people who tend to go on at length and BEYOND about their ailments ..
Hope you get some much deserved rest tonight.

Had a call around 3pm .. a cousin in Merritt BC has passed away .. Bill is in his late 70s. I have met him off and on .. we aren't close .. just kinda sad for his family.
He is a published author .. his books deal with the Salmon fishing Industry in BC ..

Lorna's Dad is again WAITING .. this time for either angioplasty OR if that proves impossible .. a double bypass .. open heart surgery is not as cruel and invasive now a days .. but .. worrisome for an elderly person.
Like Betty and her friend Ann .. if you have some room .. keep some positive thoughts for him.

Off to bed .. have to re arrange all the bedrooms in the morning in preparation for the window installers.

All the best in this upcoming week everyone

~M~

Coffee is on everyone, hope I didn't make it too strong.

"M" sorry to hear about your cousin's death.

Brrr cold this morning, should have unpacked my car last night because this morning I'll need to wear gloves..

Gab when I get to work

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

The news from Newmarket is ALL GOOD ^_^

Lorna's Dad had 2 stents placed today at 7am, back to his room by 10am, lunch at 1130am .. AND .. he might be discharged tomorrow !!!! How's that for service !!!
Now, Lorna's Mom has to try and keep him 'a bit' quiet for a couple of days .. he is feeling SO wonderful !!

Hang on to your heating pads !!! It was -8C here this morning, AND, the 'S' word has snuck into the weather reports several times ...

Windows are installed (WHY did we wait so long) .. look just awesome ..
Took the dogs to a Wildlife Park to keep them out of the house and away from the tradesmen .. have some amazing pics of the deer .. have to download them from my cell phone still .. than I'll post a couple if they turned out.

Off to work a culinary miracle !!

Rather cold here as well "M"...

So nice not worrying about heat loss now that you've got the windows in..I've a smart meter and they are saying there are a few discounts being given for off prime time but lordy who is home during those hours..so new windows can't but save you $$$..

Right now I'd almost welcome snow just so I don't have to see all those leaves..going to rain all week so can't get them raked, might have to stay on the ground until spring..

What wonderful news about Lorna's dad, can't believe they send them home so soon, maybe because being in their own environment leads to quicker healing?

Off for a hot bath, I must be tired as I can't seem to warm up AND I've the heat on, fireplace on so might as well try bathing, might do the trick

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Journey is doing very nicely. I had not plannd to have him in the house - fixed up the porch/sunroom s he cold be out there until he got used to being in a house bt he hd other plans and has quickly integrated himself into the routines- uses the crate and big dog bed in the rescue room . Kept him on a long line out in the yard when he went outside just in case but I took it off this afternoon when his 'brother' Montana, came to visit and he has been fine. We have even gone for a couple of little walks out to the front sidewalk and to a neighbors which is pretty good for a dog who has never worn a collar or leash!
Had some issues last night when I was going to bed as I discovered he hates being shut in a crate but we sorted that out although I spent a lot of extra time at the computer playing solitaire late last evening waiting for him to settle so I could slip away!

Out to vote this morning, municipal elections. Hot 3 way race for mayor-I actuallly there are about 14 candidates and 3 pulled out ) but only 3 real contenders.

My, Journey is certainly a handsome boy.

Have popped on for a sec to show the pics of the deer taken today .. have some pics of Lilly and Piper, but, I put them on the pet forum.

AW-w-w, Journey is so beautiful, and looks so intelligent. What a great thing, to foster animals.

WE have had a couple really nice (unseasonably) warm days tucked into the week, and I've so loved them. Have to get the woolies out soon though.

Neighbour gave me a really interesting looking house plant. I'm sure she said it was a geranium (her English is limited), but it has fuzzy stems and striped leaves, so not sure. Really looks nice though, and hope I can keep finding enough light to keep it going through the winter.

Keep warm, y'all . . .

Journey is so adorable, how do you ever bare to part with them?

"M" you've so much wildlife, what a treat to be able to snap a photo so closely. I miss not living on the farm, also had deer, moose and little critters.

I'm also enjoying nice fall weather but I see that it's clouding over, calling for 2 or 3 days of rain..

Anxious to hear which kind of geranium you got, you've just reminded me my mother geranium is still under gazebo, it does well all year in the house providing I don't let it freeze, best I bring it in tonight!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Betty it is usually pretty easy for me because really 2 dogs is all I am comfortable with in the long term. And I found out early on that when even the nicest dog leaves we all heave a sign of relief and say 'back to 'normal'
4 is actually a bit much for me expecially if there are any issues with eating because I cannot leave bowls of food sitting around my own dogs will just shove in and eat it. Freedom ( boarder) for instance is not used to other dogs round, usually wont eat unless I have the food at my side and the others out of the way. Journey would not eat this morning but Freedom went and ate his instead of her own ( I think she likes what I feed better than what she gets at home!) Well I am going out in an hour or so and I will gate Journey in and leave his food down and maybe he will eat.

Betty speaking of geraniums: I had a couple of quite pretty plants outside this summer and I brought them in last month, They have been putting up new totally green shoots, maybe the red color will come as they mature but I am wondering what is best- to try to over winter as houseplants or to cut back all the growth and just keep them barely mist over winter and let them start up again late winter? My mother used to dig them up, shake all the dirt off, store in paper bags hanging in the basement and pot them up again maybe in Feb/March.

Victoria Harbour, ON

I've done both, I cut them back, just barely the stumps showing, put them in the laundry room in basement which is usually dark and cooler and the very odd time I gave them a little water..what beauties they were come spring..last year I put the pot which is extra large in front on patio door in back bedroom, quite cold and I had flowers just after Christmas...

Those puppies sure are lucky to have you..kids were talking last night when they were visiting as to what kind of dog grandma would get next once Sailor's gone..got to tell you, there will be no dog..kitties will do just fine, I'm too tied to the house with a dog.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I have a broken mirror mounted on my fence - it is quite interesting to see how dogs react when they see that other dog there!

Thumbnail by fancyvan
Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Lots of chatter on here. Pleased to see that Lorna's Dad is on the mend and prayers for Ann's husband.
Carol those kids are cuties for sure, if I could handle more hair than my Cleo I would put my name in for one of them.
I have overwintered geraniums a few times and have had the most success with digging them up and shaking off all the soil. Cuting back and dipping in soapy water then potting up and keeping them in the basement window. I think the cool temps in the basement put it into slowness. I did do cuttings also which were sort of ok. I did the paper bag thing and a 5 gallon pail thing both of which work for some of the saved plants.
Off to Kananaskis tonight for a school trip with my daughter so I hope the S----stays away for a few days!
I'll fill you all in on the fun after.
Ann

Victoria Harbour, ON

Carol that photo is eyecatching..hope you enter it into Dave's photo contest..everything seems green in your garden..

Ann enjoy yourself, are you kidding us about the snow? just know you are blowing it my way, please don't

As for the geraniums, not sure why they call some the 'mother' plant? I don't take slips from it, maybe I should try this year..

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Chuckling away to myself here at a MOST vivid memory of my Mum .. Irish as Paddy's Pig and just FILLED with so many folklore tales .. Carol .. had she have walked into your garden and seen that broken mirror .. WELL ..
Piper noticed himself in one of the old windows left behind by the window fellas yesterday .. he was absolutely TICKED OFF that we had ALLOWED a dog that looked just like him into HIS enclosure LOL
Gotta luv these furries ...

Pickled beets today .. kitchen looked like a scene from a 'B' grade horror movie, and the house smelled like vinegar, cinnamon and cloves .. may dill some carrots tomorrow, not too sure as tomorrow heralds the arrival of the new washer and dryer. Doubtless I will HAVE to give it a spin ^_^

Ann .. have fun in Kananaskis, love that name, and remember driving through there many years ago on a family trip .. sure hope that 'S' word stays AWAY !!!!

Betty/Carol .. Geraniums are such beautiful plants, and, hearty .. I have brought them inside and seen them go kinda 'gangly', then cut them back to stumps and had them come back like Betty mentioned ..

Off to shower and start supper

Take care

My favorite "M" pickled beets.. my grandmother would take a fit if there was a broken mirror in the house...I'm not as superstitious but yep still am cautious when handling mirrors

Dundas,, ON(Zone 5b)

Carol, you're going to have a lot of fun with that mirror, I think.

I finally fund someone who knows even less about gardening than I do . . .
There Are No Stupid Questions, Just Stupid People, Part 2
Garden Center | Toronto, ON, Canada

(I overheard a coworker trying to help someone choose a plant.)

Coworker: “Hi, how can I help you today?”

Customer: “I’m looking for a nice plant for the front of my house.”

Coworker: “Alright, we have a number of excellent options to choose from. What kind of sun exposure does the spot get?”

Customer: “Well… it’s light all day, then dark at night.”

Me: *losing hope*

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

The mirror has been there for many years and yes it is lots of fun. People have looked at the fence and said- Oh there is a hole in your fence or There is a dog next door just like yours! Dogs when they see themselves have reactions like who the heck is that to barking at that strange dog .It is quite funny! I dont often have the camera close enough to get a picture.

Went to the vet this afternoon as I was concerned about his surgical site ( from neutering 2 weeks ago) and he confirmed the stitches had been pulled and there was infection. So he is on antibiotics. I did not want to put a cone on him to stop the licking so I bought him a neat pair of brown plaid panties they make for females in heat. Works like a charm!

Thumbnail by fancyvan
Victoria Harbour, ON

Too cool Carole, lol, what they don't make now..hate those cones, had Ned here for a few days (labradoodle) and felt so sorry for him having to wear it.

OMG, imagine answering the clerk like that, she must have been in stitches, DON'T think any of us are that bad..I'm not into proper plant names infact half the time I can't tell you the difference between a rose and a tulip, we'll not quite that bad but nearly..lol..thanks for my morning laugh!

It rained a good part of the night and calling for more over the next few days..still better than that fluffy stuff..

gab later

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Will have to keep thos panties in mind in case Piper needs them .. he is being neutered Nov.8th.
Took him for TWO walks yesterday .. he still fusses a bit with the leash, but, is getting better, AND, he is a good little walker ..

We were to have gotten rain yesterday .. but nothing happened .. so .. mayhaps today.
Washer and dryer get delivered today, so hope it won;t be IN the rain ..

Probably put down some dilled carrots today .. kinda easy .. just have to make sure I have enough vinegar ..

Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone ^_^

~M~

Victoria Harbour, ON

Roger "M" used to make dilled carrots, loved them..all these jars you are putting down makes me homesick for his canning, should be doing some on my own because I've got his recipe's.

New washer/dryer, did I miss it, did you sell the other set?

only 46 here today, sky is heavy, just know we'll get rain shortly..better now than the weekend I guess

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

UGGGGGgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg ..... I am SO disappointed !!!! Waited all day for Sears to arrive, they did at 4pm .. walked in and looked at my Maytags .. where did I want them, showed him where in the garage .. came back in .. another knock on the door .. they can only leave the DRYER as the WASHER is too damaged !!
Buyer for my old unit arrives tonight ..
Called the salesperson from Sears .. she was all apologetic .. ordered me a new set .. TEN day wait on that .. sooooooo .. I guess I am gonna become a LAUNDROMAT gal .. since I usually do 4 loads a week .. I think I am going to try and pare down a bit .. lord .. I haven't a CLUE how much laundromats charge anymore .. last time I used one (in nurses training) it was a quarter for a washer and the same for the dryer LoL
Life can become just so darned interesting !!!

NO snow (yet) today, but, like you Betty .. the skies have been threatening ..

No dilled carrots today .. didn't want to get INTO the swing of it and get side tracked .. probably the weekend.

Guess i should think something up for supper

~M~

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Went to the Laundromat today .. $2.50/machine and $1. for 20 minutes of drying !! YIKES ...

Otherwise another typically busy and disjointed day .. but .. sunny and bright but cool, I think maybe 8C

All is well in King City with Lorna's Dad ..

Quiet in here today ^_^

I am off to bed ..

~M~

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Wow! I remember saving all my quarters to do laundry! Guess that must have been about 20 years ago before I bought the house and had my own!

ANother nice day here although supposed to start to cool down a bit

Still have not finished planting my bulbs, seem to have a lot of other little things to do and dont want to get down and dirty unless I have a full morning or afternoon.

Journey is doing well, went for a groom today- I dont think he was impressed, when I picked him up an hour later he would not even look at me! Groomers is in the basement so I had to carry him down stairs. The first thing he did was walk around and pee- twice! Groomer was not concerned- as she said lots of pee smells down there and water and a mop ready to clean it up! Slept all night last night, first time he has not woken me up half way thru the night.
