Hi again,
I live near many farms & this one farm I frequent said the heat (I assume he meant the humidity) just ruined his crop. I was kind of surprised b/c I thought vegetables need hot weather, so I asked him what about California & he said it never gets that hot over there.
That particular farm was growing several things like green/yellow beans, zucchini, eggplant, spaghetti squash, corn, baby cukes, tomatoes, honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon, etc.
How CA could be cooler than Kingsville, Ontario is beyond me, so I thought I'd ask.
Around what temperature does it need to be for optimum vegetable growing & as my sister pointed out, FL where's it VERY humid is where all the oranges grow, so does this mean citruses can handle much hotter temperatures?
Thanks
Michelle
Tempature best for growing
No plants can handle hot, hot, temperatures. California has a perfect weather combination. It stays around 75 year round. No temperature highs or lows. Plants love this kind of weather. In Texas you can have 4 months of l00 degrees then in the winter you get 30's & 40's. Too cold for most plants. However, some plants like Brocolli & onion grow o.k. , & Okra grows good in the l00 degrees.
Michelle, this years heat has been out-of-the-ordinary. Excessive temps in many parts of the continent put a damper on many crops. Even plants that like heat, such as those you mentioned, may live thru it but their pollen becomes non-viable at excessively high temps and thus no production. Here in NC we had many days at 100º, many more days in mid-to-upper 90's, not good for many crops.
Hopefully next year will be better for your local farmer as well as farmers across the nation/continent.
As for citrus, oranges/etc tend to bloom in the spring when temps are not so high nor humid. The orange itself won't be mature until the following autumn and yes, the trees will easily handle the heat as long as they've been given ample water. Keeping this in mind remember that the veggies we grow, the warm weather lovers, produce in as little as 30 to 55 days for some, as much as 85 days and more for others; during that time of extreme heat is when production will wane due to those excessive temperatures like we've had this year.
I hope this helps.
