Tomatoes

Windsor, Canada

Hi there,

I live near several farms & the tomato capital of Canada & when I first moved here the tomatoes from this one farm were wonderful, but as many of you already know, this year has been terrible & the tomatoes have this yellow or white area in them that's hard & sometimes has prickly edges. I have to cut around that area.

Does anyone know what that is?

Also what does it mean when green or black worm shaped pieces show up in the tomato? I always assumed it was just the tomato starting to go bad, but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks

Sounds like the tomatoes have been affected by stink bugs. These pests insert their snouts underneath tomato skin. The enzyme they leave at the sting point turns that area of the tomato into liquid. The bug then drinks the liquid. Sting points produce dark pinprick marks on the tomato. Discolored areas appear on tomatoes where fluid is removed. They’re often white, yellowish or light green. Damage can appear knot-like.

Kathy, do you think this is a stink bug? (in the last picture): http://happyfarming.com/2010/08/31/mulching-my-garden-beds/
I hope not :( This bug is resting on a cucumber leaf, but it's right next to my tomato plants.

Thomas, your bug is a green stink bug nymph. It'll lose it's black color soon and be all green.

Michelle, I agree with Kathy, sounds like you have stink bug bites in your tomatoes. They're still edible though, just cut off the bad spots.

As for the green/black wormy spots, are they in the tomato or on the skin? And does it look there there has been an entrance point on the skin for it to be worms/bugs? If not the black parts could be internal BER.

Thanks, Shoe.
I think I saw one on my pole beans last year too.
