Are you going to replace the silver maple Victor? They are so prettiful.
Victor's is bigger.. and we have photos to prove it!!
With other things, not another silver. They are not suitable for a garden. Roots grow above ground and the wood gets brittle.
ahhhh I did not know that. The only one in my hood in ON got struck by lighting when I was a seedling.
I do like their bark, but they're better suited to open areas.
We have one silver maple here, and it's staying. I do have a garden right at it's feet, too, but it's mostly all mayapple in there.
Bill, you're right, the weeds to get away from you when you leave them for a month or more. I should do it once a week, but seems I always have so many projects going, I just let the weeding go by the wayside. I don't know, but maybe I have a lot more gardens than you do? How many acres do you have, and how much of it is gardens? We have 1.25 acres here with at least half that in gardens, maybe more. It seems I'm always adding more to the gardens, too. Oh, well. Par for the course for me. I always like to have something new going on.
Karen
you would have to come here to compare - 2 acres
Yep, what schikenlady said....lower goals = more reasonable results!
How does Bill manage it with more and I can't take care of less? Must have more time and stamina than I do. Or maybe no social life at all. *SIGH!*
Karen
I know wha's (Bill's) secret:
He has a "Time Machine" in his basement, and he goes back in time 3-4 hours, and does his gardening with that extra time.
Simple-simple.
no time machine - just not afraid of playing in the yard and have always be able to get stuff done faster than most. Now if i was working in the yard, that would go slower - i look at it as playing/exercise because it is fun for me.

I am in awe of Bill's garden work ethic and his design and implementation. No reason to see any negatives in it at all. Wish I had his energy.
So, he has no magical machine in his basement ?!?
You're a skeptic !!!
You may be right, Bill, I may get too depressed after seeing your magnificent work. Then again, it might just give me that kick in the butt that I need to get more work done here.
Hmmmmm...... I think I need a time machine. Or maybe just clone myself. No, I clone Bill, and his clone can help out at my place.
Karen
thx victor
ba no magic about it you just need to get off your butt and do something-complaining, slacking, and cloning will not get it done.
Darn - I was just looking into cloning.
Darn, I guess you're right, Bill. :-P
Karen
Darn.....Bill clones would sell well!
Methinks wha's garden is in part of the matrix where things happen quicker. I bet he can do those zippy moves that Keanu Reeves did in the movie too!
don't forget Bill has weeding in-laws
Here's the deal on Bill - His many gardens are exquisite because he works extremely hard even after a workday and long commute - He also works very hard to stay physically fit to get that extra stamina - As much as I love giving him a hard time as often as I can - he is one super and admirable role model, along with being one of the nicest and most fun people I've met here, which is saying something given the number of super people that Hank and I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting. I admit to being the one to "push him" into doing an RU, because I knew that everyone would enjoy seeing the fantastic results of his hard work and creative vision with his mushrooms, bird houses, stone tables and beautiful trees and plants, not to mention his lovely wife!! I agree with Victor - no need to see any negatives or feel depressed after seeing what Bill has been kind enough to share with us! Bill is the last person who would want to have anyone compare his garden to theirs and then feel bad. Not gonna happen!
Oh, and yeah....weeding in-laws in their 80s help a lot! LOL
heehee! M-I-L was very sweet showing us around!
Yes, I really enjoyed them both! Very nice people - and very proud of Bill's gardens. You could tell how much they think of Bill.
Not afraid to have people come to my house....but we have to much going on as far as contruction for the next few years.
Brian & I talked about an RU at our house....but not for about 5 years :(
Our idea is to have people bring tents, R.V.'s , campers and stay the entire weekend. Not sure how many campers ect... we can handle. We have 18 acres of land but that will dwindle some once we start building our house down back. We should have 2 houses by then so approx. 5 - 6 bedrooms will be available too. I'm thinking in August as our days are warm and nights cool. I'd like it to be at harvest time, corn, cukes, melons, swiss chard, salad fixings and most importantly, blueberries, will all be in season....no need to go to the store! I would like to have lobsters for those who like seafood...BBQ steak & chicken will be availble too....i'm thinking it will be an Old Fashion Maine Hoedown!!
D-nut, get your passport ready!!!!
Jeez, Celeste! You don't mess around! Sounds heavenly! May I reserve the garden suite? ....you know, the one that Sophie manipulated Brian into building for her????? LOL
I think I can stay a week or so, Pixie! And Louise, you are so right about Bill.....terrific person & gardener....now, how much did he pay you? I'll tell if you will.....
I'm blocking out the entire summer!
marilyn i am now indebted to louise for life! Louise you are too kind!
