Our area has very poor soil. Should I fertilize before plants go into dormancy or should I wait now until the spring? We live in zone 5 in Colorado. We amended the soil when we planted our trees and shrubs, but not sure if we amended it enough. We have fruit trees, maples, lilacs, viburnum, boxwood, juniper, spruce, scotch pine, caragana, roses, Maxmilian Sunflowers, and hosta. So far, the Maxmilian Sunflowers seem to be doing the best in our area. Any advice would be appreciated.
Best time to fertilize trees and shrubs
I would get a soil test done first to see what nutrients your soil needs.
I prefer to fertilize my trees and shrubs in the early spring because they need it while they are actively growing. If you fertilize in the fall, sometime it will encourage a late spurt of green growth that will get nipped off if you have a freeze.
