Nandena losing leaves

Alpharetta, GA

About a month ago, one of three of my Nandena bushes began to lose its leaves from the ground to two-thirds up the bush. Then, about two weeks ago, the two on each side began to do the same thing. I ask a sales person at a Garden Center what they thought it could be. Their answer was grubs, and I purchased some granules to sprinkle around the base of each plant and watered as instructed. The problem has not stopped, but seems to be worse. What else, besides grubs could be causing all of the bottom leaves to fall off?

How long have they been in the ground and has it been as dry there this summer as it has up here? Nandinas that are fairly well-established can exhibit this kind of behavior as a response to drought stress. A newly planted shrub would lose foliage from the top down, but established ones tend to shed older foliage first.

They have been in the ground for about 3 years. It has been very hot and VERY dry here this Summer. A lot of my plants, shrubs, and vegetation have had yellowing of leaves and also some loss of foliage, but these seem to be suffering the most, with the exception of one blueberry plant that was planted this past Spring.. But strangely, the one right next to it is doing well, while this one has little to no growth, and yellowing of leaves. Could be the drought...guess we'll find out, if we ever get any rain. Thanks for the reply.

Just because they're planted side by side doesn't mean they have grown the same amount of roots. Who knows whats going on down below. It still seems drought related and the only thing you can do right now (unless it starts raining at least once per week) is give it a good soaking every 5-7 days depending on how well your soil drains.

O.K. Thanks...will give it a try.
