Getting lilacs to bloom

Imperial, PA

I have a lilac bush that is about 15 years old. It has never bloomed though it has been in what I believe is a good spot for it. What are the requirements for bloom?

When I first got mine, it took 3 years for it to bloom. Of course, it was very small then. I would say, don't prune until you get blooms (in case you have) and it really needs full sun. I have one that gets sun from morning to early afternoon and blooms very well. Another that gets mid afternoon to evening sun and blooms are small, but good. I dug that one up from the neighbors, so it needs a bit of care for a while longer. When it does finally bloom, don't cut the old buds that turn to seed heads off. Some say you should, but I didn't get blooms on mine for 2 more years after, when I did. Cut them off when you see where the blooms are coming from the next year.

Good thought about pruning. My lilacs only get a trim right after blooming. Even if tempted the shears don't go near these babies all summer or fall. Always get flowers.
