Coffee Break # 44 - Fall is here

Its a childs lift top desk. Probably some of us remember them in school. The people kept putting antiques out by the side of the road as they did not want to deal with them after they had a yard sale. Kicker is I was a day late! The 1st day a guy offered them 400 and they sold the stuff. He turned around and brought it to a flea market in NY and made 6 grand in one day....arghhhhhh. So I kept riding by for 2 weeks and checking! There is another what I call a hall desk that is bigger and going to auction. Yeah its dusty and needs to be cleaned. People put stuff out like that for free!

No I have not heard that name Maria. The one antique shop in Newport that I know of now is runned by Hooper.

Thomaston, CT

People do not put stuff like that out here....only really cheap stuff!

Well, that was back in 1964, the people that owned it were quite a bit older than I was, so could be it was sold, It was very large store.

Sorry you missed the 1st day, I was a registered Antique appraiser for many years working for a large antique shop and also was the buyer for it. When ebay started people who were smart enough preferred selling their items there but good auctions were always some where.

That is the size desk I need for the corner of my living room! Why can't I ever find something like that on the side of the road?

Antique appraiser - wow wow wow. I am impressed. Been doing antiques for 7 years so I dont know hardley squat. I was in a group shop for a couple of years and did really well - until the economy started to go sour 3 years ago and I had to pull out.

I have not mastered in anything yet. (not even my entire life) Was trying linens but that didnt work. Now I have moved on to glass. An auction will come up, I will do some research on ebay to see what things go for and I will bid accordingly.

Jen if we were closer I would give that desk to you!

Litany of bad news continues. At the wake of my friend's mother, I found out another friend's 80 year-old mom, who is so osteoporotic she is completely bent over, had breast cancer. She has had a lumpectomy and the docs are now watching. Another friend's dad was rushed back to the hospital that same day. He has been dealing with a mass near his colon that in inoperable. To top it off, I found out a childhood friend had cancer, but thankfully is free for five years now. Can you believe this???!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Wow, I guess as we get older more people we know will be getting sick and passing.

Found out last week a long time friend's mom had passed away in July...I never knew and felt awful that didn't get to go to the funeral

Yes, true for the older folks bit when you hear about young people, it really is like a punch in the stomach.

Heard an expression today I have not heard in years - 'If you're happy and you know it, share your meds!!'

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

This what happens when we get older, can't live for ever. I had breast cancer at the age of 22, now that was 60 years ago, they hardly new anything about cancer then except that was the beginning of the end.

In those days very few people new about penicillin, only sulfa drugs were used. The did not help me either when I was burning up with Fever after the birth of my first child in 1948.
Dr came and said this medicine has only been used in the war, we just can use it for civilians. Of course I got helped right away after loads of injections.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

True, Maria, but to hear someone in his early 40's with cancer is a shock. Already lost a few friends.

The older you get the more you know that leave.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm not that old yet!

Did I say you were old?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Did you? I forgot.

Maybe I did in dog years.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

To me you are a young man, Victor, my Grandchildren would
think you are an old man, all depends who looks at you. My great grand children think I am ancient and they are right.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

47 years OLD!!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

My youngest is 50 years old, the oldest 62, the two
in between are 57 and 55. The oldest grandchild is 38
now can you see why I feel ancient?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Maria, I am the youngest at 50, next would be 56, 59, 61, 62, 63, 66 are all boys. Both my parents have passed.....your children are very lucky to still have you. ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nah!! My grandmother almost made it to 99. She was in great shape until the year before she passed.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Celeste, do you sometimes feel like an orphan? I feel that way every once in awhile. It's weird not having your parents around.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Very much so, Christmas, Mother's day & Father's day are very hard for me. My Dad's been gone for 25 years:(

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

That's a long time, I thought the holidays would be bad but it hits me at strange times.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

My mom died 25 years ago, and my dad died 15 years ago, and every once in awhile it still hits me pretty hard, in fact just at my nephews wedding I was crying talking about them.

I have 8 brothers and sisters, and I see my sisters almost every month, so that is good. I only see my brothers 1-2 times a year.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Same here Deb, at Tarsha's Wedding....I missed them terribly.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Another disgusting hoax. I was a bit suspicious about the pattern. Nothing on the eyes.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

DH was just talking about that, I told him there are a lot of people with mental health problems out there.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, many who will do extreme things for attention or whatever. Pretty sad commentary.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Very sad, while reading that article noticed they updated the one on the mayor in TX that killed herself and her daughter, I don't understand why people don't reach out for help 1st before doing something so drastic.
