Pretty, tranquil scene by the cottage!

We finally got to Bok Tower gardens last Friday on our drive over to Daytona from my Dad's. Dedicated in 1929. The gardens were delightful, the art work was unique, there were vistas of inland Florida, and the tower was just awesome.
The architect was F.L.Olmsted Jr. of Biltmore and Columbian Exposition fame. Bok wanted to preserve the beauty of this mountain and showcase the flora and fauna of Florida. He gathered artist to bring his gardens to fruit in a spectacular way. From the Georgian marble singing tower, (yes, there is a carillon within), to the one of a kind ceramics depicting local creatures large and small you are surrounded by calm and beauty. This one man's vision will be his legacy and an opportunity for generations of enjoyment.I'll include a link to a few of our photos and the tower's homepage. Enjoy Ric

Very pretty thanks for sharing. Love the detail work on the tower and the tiles.
relaxing cottage and garden pics!
I felt like stepping onto one of those lily pads......thanks.
Washington Oaks State Park is over 400 acres bordered by the Atlantic on the east and the Matanzas River to the west. The desert like dune scrub gives way to a lush coastal hammock bordered by tidal marshes. The land was owned by General Joseph Hernandez a militia general during the 2nd Seminole War and Florida's 1st delegate to congress. George L. Washington, a distant relative to the president married the generals daughter and purchased the land in 1888. Sold by his heirs it fell into foreclosure and was purchased in 1936 by Louise P. Clark, a very successful business woman, and the future Mrs. Owen D. Young. Young was the Chairmen of the board of GE and the founder of RCA .
The house, gardens, groves and planting we designed and developed by the Youngs and was their winter home till his death in 1962. Louise donated Washington Oaks to the state in 1964 and died in 1965. Washington Oaks Historic District was added to the National Register by the keeper in 2009.
Here's a few pics, enjoy, Ric

On our visit to Charleston, we didn't win the lottery as far as carriage tour assignments went. We saw the backside of Charleston instead of the battery home and gardens we wanted. So Holly and I just had to go on our own walking tour, playing streets and alleys, peeking in corners and through gateways to see the treasures within. Here's a link to some of what we saw. I want to go back and spend days wondering the alleys of Charleston. LOL Ric

schickenlady - having been twice to New Zealand and once to Australia, I would go back to New Zealand in a flash. Have no great burning desire to return to Australia even though it's a huge country with many areas we didn't get a chance to see. We DID enjoy both, but aside from the unusual animals in Australia, we much preferred New Zealand and the people in New Zealand..
Wow - lucky you!!
Part of play the viola, see the world! International Viola Congresses are held somewhere each year (though maybe not in 2011 as the original location fell through and I don't think there is yet another location). We've gone all over the place. That was the first trip to NZ and the following year my DH had a conference there. We could hardly wait to go back. It was also a viola congress in Oz.
I used up a lifetime accumulation of aeroplan points to get to Oz. Back when we first went to NZ I was treasurer of the International Viola Society and got some help with my travel costs though I capped everyone's refund so as not to bankrupt the society. DH travels a lot and gets a lot of points which have also helped at times.
Ann
i've been to Australia a few times and NZ once - it would be hard for me to choose one over the other.
Couldn't bring up the FL or SC photos, Ric & Holly....but if I had to live in a city, Charleston would be my choice....loved it.
Sorry about the links, I tried them when I posted and they worked. I did refresh them and they are working again. Ric
Charleston is so pretty, never been there, but heard the humidity is atrocious during the summer
Nice shots, Debi! I hope you both enjoyed your getaway, and it looks like you found some pretty spots!
Weeze - that cabin shot is very tranquil and Dextah is a BEAUTY! Love his face!
Ric - I'm so glad you got to Bok Tower. Isn't it awesome? We make the trip every year. I just can't get enough of it....speaking of tranquil!!
Yes Louise, very serene. I needed that before getting on i4 to Daytona. LOL
I'll bet there weren't 20 cars there the day we visited, so we felt we had the place to ourselves. The only regret was, there were heavy storms in the area, and we couldn't dally quite as much as we would have liked. Ric
Ric, if you and Holly end up in Fla this winter and decide to go back to Bok Tower, send me a dmail and perhaps we can coordinate a visit. We have to go on days that are cold enough for us to leave the puppies in the car though. If you think I-4 requires some serenity, you should try I-75 with all the huge rigs. I hate it! LOL
Louise, I do drive 75 from Waldo to highway 52, every time I go to my dads. At least that section isn't a parking lot. LOL I'm not sure we'll be down this winter or not. Ric
May I request a part 2 to this thread. It's reaching the point where it takes awhile to load in my Internet which is only "hi-speed lite".
sure!
