Changing the subject a little bit. My DW and I are taking the Conway Scenic Railway trip in Oct up thru Crawford Notch. We go every fall but drive thru the notch. We decided this year to that the railway. I love it over there. We also go up to Rangeley via Rumford/Mexico stopping at the height of land for pics. Quite an overlook. Other than that I've been all over the world. Love the Costa del Sol in Spain and also loved England (Portsmouth area).
Travel destinations, what are your favorites?
Yes, I like the notch too. We took the railroad, but never in the fall. Must be gorgeous.
Jealous of anyone who has traveled the world extensively.
For the uninitiated, where is Crawford Notch?
NH.
We did that train, very nice. We will be going for our annual NE trip in 2 weeks, then the WV caboose camping trip in 4weeks.
Ann, it is in New Hampshire, a beautiful spot, especially in the fall with its glorious colors. We have been there several times.
Where in NE, Deb?
I think the first night we are staying in Nashua, NH, then the second night in Newport Vermont, there is a park in the northern part of NH close to ME that is supposed to have moose, haven't been there before, but read about it. The third night back to Bennington VT and then home. We like the back roads, rte 100 in VT is one of my favorites, rte 16 in NH, looking for moose, mountains and foliage.
DH makes all the arrangements, I just pack my bags.
Frank - we are hoping to do the Notch train trip at some point. Our puppies are too young and have no overnight care for them yet, but maybe next year. Debilu - Hank wants to hear about the WV caboose camping trip tomorrow. We both love the trains.......have you done the Great Smoky Mountain RR from Bryson City, NC over the Natahala Gorge? And how about the Durango to Silverton, CO trip? We loved both of those.
Sounds really nice, Debi!!
Durango Silverton is one of the most gorgeous!!
Did you see my thread last fall for the caboose trip?
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/916002/
we do this every year, or one similar
Sounds great, Deb. Your hubby is like me. I always do all the planning.
Yes, Debi, I do remember your thread....it looked like such a cool way to travel as I recall! I haven't shown it to Hank yet.....I should have. Do you recall if they allow pets or not?
I don't know Louise, we leave ours at the kennel
Will you take the same caboose trip again next month? Two nights? Different caboose? Really sounds great!
same one, 2 nights, it's the third different one we've done
I can understand why you would repeat that trip! I'd really love to do it myself! We plan to spend a day in the Harper's Ferry Nat'l Park in WV on our way back up to CT for a quick weekend in November. It's a lovely state.
I really like train travel....would love to do the Canadian Rockies.....
My husband was like you Victor and debilu's DH
He also planned the arrangements for this country but I planned for all the foreign countries.
Edited to say that is how we traveled in Europe only by trains. Here only by car, that is not my most favorite way to travel.

We have also wanted to do the Canadian Rockies by train, Marilyn. Of course, that game plan got put on hold when we adopted our lovely puppies. Some day.....
Too bad they couldn't come on the trip! They'll be grown before you know it.....
As DH is a train geek, we did the Canadian Rockies too, one of the first train trips.
why nashua debi?
just a starting point, we like to go north from there to Berlin, Lincoln, etc. We can't leave til 3-4 fri eve, so it will be late when we get there
got it - there are some really nice restaurants in nashua
open late?
good question - michael toimothy's is rated the best restuarant in nh - we just went there for my b-day - it can be pricey if you like good wine. there are many more as well.
my in-laws will be here tomorrow and they eat out 1 or 2 times a day - we will have to ask them although they are in bed early:)
I'll be there soon too, leaving at 5 am!!
Safe trip, Debi!!
thanks Louise
1 or 2 times a day, Bill?!! Does that include stealing your tomatoes? ^_^
they are co-veggie growers with us so stealing is not accurate - equal distribution is a problem
I want to do the Canadian Rockies so bad I can taste it!!!. I told DW about the conversation around PEI and we've been thinking about going there some time too. Have to get PASSPORTS!!!! of all things!!! Used to love to run across the border every now and then but can't any more without that passport. My ancesters are from the Smokies (TN, NC, VA corners). Came back to Maine in Oct 08 from a trip to midwest and went thru the smokies/appalachians in Kentucky and WV. Was that ever beautiful!!! I'd like to do Europe sometime too on the train pass thingy, especially Austria.
I watched a program on PBS about a year ago, it was called
"The Jewel of Europe" , I don't think you need to guess what country I am talking about, you know which one.
Frank65 - Get that passport. It's useful for more than getting to Canada. But don't blame Canada for needing one. You only need the passport to get back into the good old USA. Of course, Canada won't let you in w/o it because they don't want you to get stuck here. Reminds me we need to grab our passports this week when we head to Cleveland with the 45 yr-old car.
I think I HAVE been to Crawford Notch but probably about 35 years ago. And maybe once when I was still in high school. Living WEST of NH, we generally travel in Vermont as we head to New England at least until we get to around Hanover, NH.
In NY we can get an 'enhanced driver's license' that allows us to travel to and from Canada, Mexico and much of the Caribbean.
I think those are coming here too.
Visiting friends in Washington, they live about more or less 10 miles from the Canadian border, had to bring my passport and they need one too. Kind of silly when you think about it.
Yes it is very cool and quite a sight to actually see it.
Just looked at the best Islands in the US, I have been to everyone but the one in Texas. Always wanted to live on an Island but not the touristy kind.
