This was my first attempt at growing beans so I was surprised and pleased when the plants grew beyond my imagining (I planted only 3), and proceeded to twine up and over the cage I supplied and then to even wind over a couple of my tomato plants! The foliage was lush, green, without holes and pests and we waited with much anticipation for the beans it would soon produce. Alas! Although the plants blossomed, the beans were no where to be found. We kept watching, watering, and waiting; allowing the plants to continue their crawl through my garden but nary a bean did we see. Finally, last week, I decided to clean it up so I could harvest some of the tomatoes it had climbed over. I did end up finding a handful of beans, less than a pound, but enough to make a half-hearted attempt to eat, but they must have been old because they were inedibley stringy and tough. What gives? What did I do wrong and what can I do differently next year?
Beautiful Blue Lake Pole Bean plants but few beans!
