TROPICAL GARDEN # 82

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

prita, I sure do have Justicia betonica, Squirrel Tail shrimp plant, I kept in the shade at first and then moved it to just about full sun, it didn't do squat in the shade............
In full sun, mulched heavily.................

Thumbnail by mjsponies
DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

I grew the Yellow (Golden Shrimp Plant) too, in part shade and it died. I really think it needed more sun, and I think the trick to these fellow's in to mulch them heavily...keep the roots cool............can't show you a pic cause I never got one that was worth keeping.........I have Varigated shrimp Plant, and it seem to want more sun than I've got it in also. I grow all these cause the hummer's just love them, and I love the hummer's so I plant whatever the little bugger's seem to want.

Dallas, TX

HAPPY_ 1.
It's not feeding as much as keeping up with their demanding " W A T E R M E , W A T E R ME " with all the bug killers they put in the water i do'nt like to drink it.
Talking about big EE's , you shoud have them with your FL. weather.
I only about 6-7 months of growing then back in the greenhouse.
And hopefully they will not die. I've had more that haved died
than i still alive. Most of them where too tropical for my zone even with a green house. This is a trunk of one of my Borneo Giants.

This picture is inside my green house last winter, The bow at the top is 12ft. from the ground.I had to cut back a lot of plants so they could fit in it.

tropicman - ha ! your picture of the plants in the "water containers" making a little mini pond just may have solved a problem for me...well, not "really" a problem, more of " I want " a pond, but don't really need anything else that time consuming to take care..lol...but I can have a few mini ones.....
yeah I know I'm a little slow sometimes........why didn't I think of that before.

and I love that noid fern.........now that's something we'll have to work on finding out......

Rachel, I grown Chocolate vine....lol....not now !! makes Passion vines look tame...and I grow some big passi's.

tecoma stans Myan Gold....I should get a pic of the foliage on this...it's very airy and "ferny" ( is that a word?)

Thank's Jerry.

I will move it to where I can get a drip line into the pot. I draw my water from a lake and all the plants love it. Better than tap water that I don't drink!!

Also, when I first put it in the sun it got burned a little. Too much, too soon? Or should I keep it in partial shade?

Nancy

Red Oak, TX

mjsponies, That is a very nice picture of your shrimp plant!!
Thanks for the tip on the Squirrel tail, they are planted in the shade right now but I will transplant them in a big pot, so that I can save them this winter. They came from vossner and I sure would hate to lose them. I am having pretty good luck with the yellow shrimp plants. They get about 3-4 hrs. of afternoon sun and are blooming very well, even after accidently spraying them with weed killer earlier this spring.

My perennial garden started out as a butterfly garden. I am always finding new plants to attract them, my favorite time with my GD's is sitting on the blue bench Indentifying flutterbys.
I would love to see the foliage on your Tecoma stans.

Hi Happy_1

Texasbigleaves, I overlooked your question on the Plumerias in the last thread. My Plumeria is Siam Red. The Pompano Pink has little specks on the petals.
Is your Queen Victoria blooming yet?

Rita, I do see that mantis on your var. Domesticum and that is very nice Xanthosoma atrovirens. I have always seen Praying mantis around here but for some reason not this year.

Here is another gorgeous plant from Debra. She has sent me so many lovely plants and I appreciate them all.

Tropic, I agree with mjsponies on finding out a name on the last fern you posted and I have to ask what is the name on your latest Cyrtosperma that you posted? I like it;-)

Your noid Peperomia appears to be Peperomia argyreia.

This Peperomia prostrata seems to stay in bloom. It's a keeper.

I am back from my adventures ... I did not go to Buffalo , NY this year with DH. I did have a nice Morning Glory Breakfast with a few DGrs. It was casually pleasant. I also went to my sons place with a DGr who I invited to come stay a couple days with me. We went to tropicmans place too and his place looks twice as big with tropicals than last year. He built two more areas and a greenhouse addition. I do not know how he does it. He is by himself when it is Gardening. His Plants were varied and beautiful and I got a few pictures .
Rachel, I am glad you like the plants and seeds I sent you. I have brought in all the Anthuriums now. ( I hope)
Can't wait to see how DH likes one hanging in the Bedroom. There was a hook already , so ...Now for the Philos..

tropicbreeze, I really am having fun with those wild MG seeds. I hope you got the ones I sent you..I worry about shipping letters and Packets out of the states, and hold my breath until I know it has arrived..
I have had a bloom and hope I see a few more tomorrow..

I was given a few more plants. A Pagoda plant, a polkadot plant, a big Plumeria, a candle bush tree with a bloom bud and ants, a pride of baradoes, a banana, a palm, two more named brugs, a new voodoo lily venusm, ( sp.) , found a patch of Pandurata and picked some, a field of wild hederacera, and patch of white star, and I am happy as a lark in a tree. Rita, is it your birthday yet? This week was the birthday week for 4 members of my immediate family. This is for you, Rita, Happy Birthday in September.. This is in Eskridge, Kansas, she said she got it at walmart a few years ago, it is huge.

TexasBigLeaves, I am going to try real hard to overwinter my EEs and caladiums. I worked on the sun room downstairs all night last night. I think I have the right amount of light. All but the Giant ones have given me the coolest blooms.

The wind sure did knock a branch off this jewellweed.. It is so large, and it is amazing that this was a seed, in a jiffy peat tab, inside a clear plastic sip straw container, sitting on a few marbles with a tad of water all winter in the bedroom window ledge. It was so small! I am getting lots of seed pods forming so I am saving these. They are called Plum Delight .. and they Plum Delight me every time I walk by it.

I just noticed it was in the am.. College Girl wanted to come home this weekend , so I drove to get her, and she is now officially 22. . Hard for me to believe that fact.. She actually came outside to see the brugs blooming all over the place..
This is PeachesnCream, her and Maya both are bloomed, just a couple, but I have had Maya now for two years and we have deserved these four blooms, the worms keep attacking her and It is a chore to keep them from devouring her.
I got to stand under the mother tree of Maya a few days ago, and I thought I had gone to heaven.

I love going to NewYork every year to see my MIL, but I really had a great time going on mini trips to see beautiful plants in the country and in others back yards.

You wouldn't believe or maybe you would, the little blue cleodendrum I gave to Bonnie, is now a huge shrub. It was on her wish list for plants, and I couldn't seem to get it going.. She has a wonderful green arm is all I can say..

tropicman's place was equally as breath taking.. he even has bananas, but he always does it seems. I am pretty sure this banana is at least 300 pounds.. I hope he finds a different way to keep it warm this winter.. it seems like it would be too big to dig up and carry ..That red amaranthus is as tall as I am if not taller..

I was amazed at how many huge and beautiful Crotons he has.. you know, I am scared of killing them.. but he isn't .

TropicBreeze, Your fern looks alot like mine.. the one I have has HUGE fronds like that.. it came from Padre Islands as a few fronds and a wad of roots. The leaves are so thick and shiny, but they bite ya if you get to close it seems.. DH LOVES it. The name on the tag was "Macho Fern" and I have no clue if that is really the botanical name. I like ferns. I now have 2 hardy ones, and two tropical ferns.

This is one of the many views of tropicalman's garden,

Debra,
It looks like you've had a nice time ! How about you come down here and have a chat with my Brug's.
Still not one bloom for any of them. I'm going to ship them off ! ( if I don't toss em in the burn pile first...errr.)
Passion Flower edulis McCain decided to open at dusk, it's way up in a tree so we got out a ladder to get pics. The little air fern had to get in on the action. I'm going to try to get a better one in the morning.

RachelLF, that mantis came with my e-bay plant, he stayed on the plant for quite a while.
I think that I might have a Peperomia prostrata, I will have to go back and compare pictures. I like it very much.
I have been enjoying Joeswife's generosity as well!! The size of MG's blooms are unbelievable.
This is the string of hearts that you sent me, it is almost 5' long and blooming, thanks.

Joeswife, I am very happy to have you back and to read that you had a very nice visit with gardening friends!! That is my type of vacation as well.
I have been through your pictures a couple of times and have enjoyed them all. There should be some kind of award for such dedicated tropical gardeners such as your friends. I know how much hard work it can be saving those precious plants year to year.
One of my Mayas died last month and after seeing your Peaches and Cream, I will use that for a relacement.
I love my Birthday picture, thanks but it is not until the 24th. Happy-1 is also a Sept. girl.

prita, yeah D's So was out there having a fit, as I, 'yet again" have a tear in my ACL on my right knee. sigh...well, ya know, it's years of riding, and working on a farm. If I stopped for every little ache and pain, I'd have quit a long time ago !
Hey ! I have the variegated String of Heart's ! I've had this one for 11 years. Live's outside under a Live Oak until we get "frost-freezing" weather. Don't believe the 60º thing. This baby is happy even in the upper 40's..then it will sulk, I've never tried it below that and certainly won't now with the size of the plant !
I repot it every other year, and you wouldn't believe the size of the tuber's now !

Is TB's noid fern maybe a Phlebodium aureum cultivar? Phlebodium aureum 'Mandaianum' has similarities.

Here are the Winged Ferns of Hawa'i. Clockwise from top left is: Dicranopteris linearis, Diplopterygium pinnatum, & Sticherus owhyhensis.

Debra, I enjoyed viewing all the pictures you applied and it's good to read all your tropicals are set up for the Winter months.

Rita, that little string of hearts vine has grown like crazy for you and thanks for showing the bloom's from it. I can never get a good picture of mine while blooming and we sure have some waiting time to catch up with the fullness and length on the one mjsponies has.

Dave, I sure enjoyed viewing the fern pictures you applied from Hawai'i. Your I.D. looks good to me on Tropics fern but then again you know plants alot better than this girl ever will. Thanks for helping here.

Keaau, HI

Hi Rachel!

Here's Cacao and Vanilla for you!

Dave, I love those ferns. I especially like the Laukahi Fern. It makes a cool stance.
Rachel, I am glad you are enjoying those plants, in the picture with the dahlia I saw some pink lady thumbs.
My split leaf philo is next in line to come in with all the other special tropicals. I already got the black EEs up and re-potted.
Got a whole tub of EEs and Caladiums up and sorted out for who is taking a nap, and who is being kept awake for the winter.
Rita, what a cute Hoya for only a dollar! WOW! MJs, your string of hearts is awsome, you have a wonderful assortment of cool plants.
Did I show you the Candle Bush plant that tropicman gave me? Gee, I hope I can keep it going, like peonys, they need ants to make the blooms open.

Thumbnail by joeswife

You are going to send me on a sugar "high" with that photo being that I am still trying to figure out the right mixture for me from pure Cacao beans! I am still experimenting though.....thanks to you;-)

Debra, nice candlebush. You have a green thumb where tropicals are concerned so there is no doubt in my mind that it will thrive for you there as well.

That is fantastic. Now I am envious. Not really. It is obvious that you have more to do than spend your time on this machine. Absolutely beautiful.

Thank you and Sylvain for sharing.

Thanks, Cristi. It is a lot of work, and I'm starting to hire a young man for the heavy stuff. Can't lift and drag stuff like I used to. Wonder why? LOL

mjsponies, I am so impressed with your 11 year old string of hearts, it shows that you take very good care of your plants.
Riding horses and working on a farm sounds like a fun job, just be very careful from now on with that knee.

Metrosideros, thanks for the fern pictures, I only wish that I could find those in our local nurserys.

RachelLF, I have the string of hearts along the pathway where it gets lots of attention, it is a vey cute plant!
I have only a leaf for you tonight, but it is a new leaf from a Philo. Ring of fire that was struggling. A new leaf is something to celebeate in my world !

Joeswife , thanks , that is a nice size candlestck plant, I did not know that the blooms needed ants to open.
I caught the last yellow spider lily today, the red ones are not up yet

Pensacolagarden, I am keeping names of all those Brugs that keep on flushing, Maya, Charles Grimaldi, First Belle and a few others that I can't remember now.
It makes me happy to see it as well!!

Hi LouC

Happy_1, first of all I would like to thank lourspolaire for posting your video.

I am sitting here with my mouth open, I am in Awe. That is exactly what my dream garden looks like. Thanks!!
