Knockout Roses

Monterey, TN

I was recently given a Knockout Rose bush. Please tell me how to prune the bush to form the densist possible growth. I would also like pruning instructions for lilacs to achieve the densist growth.
Thank You

I'd like to know also. I am also interested in when to prune Rose of Sharon to keep them small

flowAjen I really appreciate your tips on growing climbing roses. There are several I have worked with for a number of years. I accidentally came upon the idea of horizontalness. It has become apparent that that does encourage flowers and I'm hoping now to see that it also encourages lateral growth. I take that to mean strong new canes that can be trained. I have been disappointed that some of them have not grown canes long enough to go up and over the trellis. I have started bending over the canes, hoping to get new ones to achieve greater height. Now I will be sure to point the ends of the bent canes downward. Great tip. The other thing I learned is after blooming for awhile the little branches need to removed and not just shortened. One mature cane had bloomed successfully for several years and I had simply cut each little branch back to a node but they just stopped doing anything. So I thought, what the heck and cut them off completely. At each of those points new leaves and flowers emerged. That was a surprising discovery for me and valuable for future success. Now, when deadheading any rose, if there are no leaves on the branch I am likely to cut the whole thing off. And how important is it to cut back to the first 5 leaves. as I've heard? I know there are hormones waiting to produce new flowers close to the last one and often that is just a 2 or 3 leaf node.

I've heard conflicting reports on cutting right above the first 5 leaves.
My success story.....my neighbor brought me a rose bush he dug up that looked dead, he thought it was a goner...I cut it all the way back and planted with manure and good garden soil, now look at it!!!

Good work flowAjen and how rewarding. I transplanted a carpet rose and the whole thing went "dead" so I too cut it all off. Wish I had a picture too. It came back strong and beautiful.
