Indian Corn - Can they harden & color after picked.

Bethlehem, NH

My corn is being attacked by birds. The easiest thing would be to pick them. However, my indian corn has not yet gotten its color or hardended off.
Has anyone ever harvested at this point and had success with the corn hardening off? Don't want to lose them, Thanks.

I've grown Indian Corn and regular corn and they never ripen up after they've been picked. I think you'll have to go all out and put up aluminum pie pans, tape, fake snakes, fake owls, etc.. You'll have to put this stuff up high enough so the birds will see them. I put a hole through 2 pie plates and put some string or rope through them and hang from posts or polls. I put 2 together so they'll bang together. Don't nest the plates. There's mylar tape which I find on line. These two work well for me. I buy the plates from walmart because they're cheap which allows me to put out a lot. There's a lot of stuff that you can find online by just googling bird scare products or something like that. Good luck to you. I've had the same problems with birds and I know how frustrating they can be.

Thank you Helen - great suggestions, I used the aluminum pie plates last year over a small pumpkin patch. Thanks for the reminder. have a great day!
