Transplants....how long is too long?

Bay Village, OH

Moved to new digs (Yay!) but got totally focused on making home livable for man and boy and forgot to test dig. (Yikes).

Got sentimental a brought some of my favorite perennials with me. They are in pots in a shady spot for now..but the new grounds are awful. Should I baby them in the pots for now and amend the grounds as much as possible before frost...What about one of those garden in a day raised kits as a temp home? I could even cold frame it if necessary for the first winter.

The plants in question are all hardy periennials..but they came from a very rich raised bed location and the new spots are hard, rock, with some clay...ugh.

Any thoughts/ experience at all is appreciated!

If you can start amending the bad soil now you should still have time to get them in the ground before it gets too cold. You can definitely keep them in pots for the time being--I do that all the time. I buy plants all summer and keep them in pots until fall comes and I can plant them, so keeping yours in pots for a few weeks while you amend the soil shouldn't be a problem. But if you can't get them in the ground this fall and need to wait until spring, then either a temporary raised bed that you plant them in (or at least sink the pots in) would be a good idea, I wouldn't suggest leaving them out for the winter still in pots without some sort of protection from the cold.

I agree- get a few bags of compost, soil, etc, and make a temporary spot where you can just bury the pots easily (ie, w/o digging in that clay/rock crap). Maybe top it off with some straw...

I've heard you can plant in a bag of garden soil.

To make a garden in a bag, punch holes in the bottom sides of the bags for drainage before you place them on the ground, cut away the tops. Then you can plant directly into the soil in the bags and mulch the area to cover the bags.
