Canteloupe not doing well

Stratford, TX(Zone 6b)

I got about 4 nice, sweet, tasty canteloupe, but then the vines stopped blooming. The few melons it did put on stayed tiny and are mishapen and seem to rot on the vine before they ripen. I have one decent sized fruit, but it is growing oblong. The vines themselves are doing well, going nuts really. But in the last couple of days, they have begun to turn yellow.

Help! New to cantaloupe this year too!

Thanks!

Call them by the right name, Muskmelon. But that's another story. Muskmelon set all their fruit at once & will all ripen with a couple weeks. We had nearly 500 plants set out. Got the first ripe ones 3 weeks ago. Then there were many, many melons at every picking, which is daily. When we picked Friday, there were only 3 green ones left. They are probably ripe today.

Thanks Bernie...

So then if they are not synonymous, then what is the difference between a MuskMelon and a canteloupe? I was under the impression they were one and the same.

So I guess once I pick that last hold-out, I am done with the melons for the season and don't need to waste any more fertilizer or water on them? We still have about a month left in the growing season, so I'm sad that's all I'll get this year.

Are watermelons the same way? I doubt I'll realize any watermelons, as my goat "helped" me with my garden this year...THREE FREAKIN' TIMES!!!..., but it's good info to file away for next year. But my "help" did away with cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. And it means that I have a bushy watermelon plant that is just now blooming. Don't think I'm gonna make the 100 days it takes, do you? :) Oh well...I love my goats. Most of the time. That's actually probably a blessing though, as my cucumbers and squash and herbs have been more than I can handle, and the tomatoes started coming in this weekend...luckily I am left with only one row of tomotoes instead of the original 4 to 5. The goat didn't eat them, but took a taste of everything, and pulled up and spit out most of it. I lost my garlic bulbs, too. He'd pluck up the little paper tips I left sticking up, and I'm still finding little garlic bulbs scattered around my garden. At least he managed to fertilize some for next year!

Thanks -

Angie
