I know it's the time of year and the heat, but I have a question...is it a good thing to cut the squash back, maybe at the first of August, to help it deal with the dry and heat?
I've noticed that a couple of my plants that were shaded by the neighbors that took off faster are now popping up and looking like it's the beginning of June. I've also noticed that where I've pinched back bug damaged branches, the plant is beginning to put out healthy-looking leaves and starting to bloom again.
So this leads to my novice question....am I supposed to be pinching back the squash plants to start with? I've had so much squash this year I haven't been able to keep up with it, even with canning 7 quarts a weekend for the past 3 weekends! But, I haven't had any new squash for over a week...then we had a cool spell, and now they're producing again, but not like it was.
Thanks!
Angie
