Japanese maple in winter mode

My Japanese maple (in a pot) leafed out in the spring, then a really cold snap hit No. Calif. and within a month, it went back into winter mode and lost all of it's leaves. It's alive, but bare. It's been that way since early June. Can it live in sleep mode till next Spring? Is there anything I can do?
