foundation landscaping

Grove City, OH

we've just purchased a new home that was a foreclosure. the front flowerbed area is a mess. we have pulled everything out but 3 shrubs (2 on 1side of front porch & 1 on other). I am in need of some good plant ideas. i would like low maintenance with season changing color. but nothing too busy....

Is the area full sun, part or shady? What type of style would you like? Any colors that you hate? What color is your house? What type of shrubs did you leave?

Post some pics, already.

Just a tip -

I've been reading up on drainage due to the very wet summer we've had here in Iowa. All the books agree that you should skip planting around the foundation because it retains moisture. In addition, the plants could damage the siding.

That being said, I grew up in Cincinnati and I know that yew works very well as a shrub there. The female plants have beautiful, red berries that birds love. Unfortunately you wouldn't get the fall color. You'd also have to trim it or it gets ragged looking. Another of my favorites is day lilies. They are very hardy, very full perennials and you can get them in a variety of colors. Again, no color change though. In a house where I lived in OH we had a burning bush hedge that was gorgeous, especially in the fall. There are so many plants with that common name I can't tell you exactly what it was though.

Hope that helps.
