Problems with my Jalapeno's

Round Lake, IL

I am not sure what is going on with my Jalepeno's. They look good for a few days then all of sudden some discoloration happens to the tips then they look like they just go bad. This seems to take about 1 week it seems.

Before they go bad??

Looks like blossom end rot to me. Usually caused by a calcium deficiency but uneven watering and excessive nitrogen also contribute to the problem. You can still eat the undamaged parts.

Thank you for the insight on this issue. I was just growing them to see if I could in a dern window box. LOL
We have had lots of rain in IL too much maybe that is also causing the issues. They are planted with 1 orange bell pepper and 1 fijita pepper plant. I would guess that adding some sort of calcium would be too late now?

You could always try mixing some epsom salt and water and spraying them with it, or adding bone meal to the soil but at this stage I'd probably try the foliar method with epsom salt since it will be absorbed by the plant quicker. I've never grown in a window box but I have grown plenty of peppers in containers ranging anywhere from 1 to 5 gallons and it's certainly possible although smaller containers result in smaller plants, smaller fruit, and more demanding watering schedules.

Excessive moisture could also be causing the problem so adding calcium might not solve anything but it's unlikely to hurt. We only get about 8 to 10" of moisture a year here so excessive moisture and all the problems it brings to the garden are something I haven't had to deal with. You might also "thin the herd" a little by removing a few peppers so the plants can use what calcium they have available on the remaining peppers.

While they may not look very appetizing the undamaged parts are still edible. Just cut off the ends and use the rest as your normally would, or send them to me and I'll eat them all.

They make a product called "Blossom End Rot Spray." It works great on tomatoes but have never used it on peppers.
