Russian Sage

Laramie, WY

I live in zone 4 Russian sages are large 5ft by 3ft and are located in partial shade, sun up to 6 hours direct sun. The plant are flopping over (growth is not compact) how and when do I prune? Prune to 6 inches or all the way down, spring, fall? VRP

I've cut mine in both the spring and the fall with no problems either way. If they look icky now, you might as well cut away. I usually take them down to 6-12". Next spring, you might want to try planting some companions like ornamental grasses or tall, sturdy perennials to help support the Russian Sage. Pinching or cutting it back might also help, but I've never tried this and don't know if it would work. I use small, discrete stakes in my garden when things get floppy. Finally, if the tall stuff is driving you crazy, try "Little Spire" - it's a dwarf variety that stays shorter and more compact. Good luck! :)

If you want to solve the basic problem, which seems to be that the plant flops, move it to full sun. You can also do this in either spring or fall... or any other time that it's convenient for you.

To help next year, as well as getting them more sun, I'd make sure you're stingy with the water and fertilizer--I've found with many drought tolerant plants like these that if you give them more water than they really need or fertilize them much they will tend to grow taller and floppier.
