We are going to till up our garden and let it rest a year so I am curious about cover crops. Which forum should I go to for that subject?
where to go to ask questions about cover crops
dunno abt the forum. Lespidizia is a nitrogen fixing cover crop turned into the soil as a green manure just prior to planting fields. Best grown in late fall, probably too large a plant for a garden. Most garden plants need nitrogen, so they rotate crops from those that fix nitrogen to those that use nitrogen in crop rotation - even in gardens. Allowing the soil to rest, is done if you have issues with balancing ph or soil viruses, but soil viruses simply lie dormant until their food is available and return. Cover crops shouldn't leave an issue with seeds that return when you don't want them. I'll try to find a a place for you to research this, and others will be along soon.
ok, I meant Vetch, not lespidizia, and I don't remember Crimson clover doing especially well In Iowa Park - too dry too many months but clovers are good, just check on whether or no you can till them back under when you are through with them and they stay tilled under, chuckl. Look at Hearne Seeds and you'll find a little info on erosion control and cover crops.
Thank you Kittriana, I had been looking at New Zealand white clover, but like you say it the weather here can be extreme (in both directions) and that's why I wanted to ask about it. We have been gardening in this spot for six years so it is time to let it rest a year. We don't have a problem with virus's but stink bugs and squash bugs have been bad this year. Hopefully taking a year off from gardening will encourage the bad bugs to die or move away (I squish or drown every one I can catch.) Hopefully growing clover and buckwheat will not only improve the soil but help the beneficials to stick around. I'm going to try to be content with gardening in the house in the coming year (sprouts and window farming) .
So I was hoping to learn what kind of clover is best for this area and when to plant it.
I have not heard of Hearne Seeds but will look them up.
Thanks for your help! And any other ideas or help from anybody is much appreciated.
I found a Texas website I played around on: picktexas.com that is difficult to get info on that you might want, but on the other hand had info I found interesting also. You are I believe in zone 7a or 7b, there is a page that will let you put your city in and it will tell you your zone here on your DG homepage, but my computer literacy is very limited, sorry. wish you the best of luck finding more data
Okay, thanks! : )
