My wife and just moved into a house where the backyard is a complete mess. The original owners wanted to make it "natural" which means all weeds I guess.
I've gone through and cut all the entire yard down, removed trees and applied brush killer 3 times. The yard is finally staying dead(yellow) with just a few spots of weeds popping up.
So I'm trying to figure out the best way to grow new grass in the fall. My original idea was to rototiller the entire yard and lay down new seed(fescue). By the way I live in Michigan.
Am I missing anything? Is there a better solution. All I want is for the yard to have nice constant grass.
Thanks for your help!
Redoing back yard
Yikes, that sounds a little drastic. haha
Are you planning on any garden/ tree/ shrub/ etc. or just grass?
Do you have shade, sun, or what?
Haha yeah I know. The weeds were about 5 feet high and spread out everywhere with massive amounts of posin ivy.
I'd say the majority of the area has sun for at least 4 hours a day.
Right now I'm just planning on grass and will add on in years to come.
Thanks!
I'd say go for it. It's got to be better than what you had. haha
If you have an idea about where you want a tree or garden, you could block that area off and save your self having to dig up your brand new grass in the spring. (cover with plastic or landscape fabric to keep strays from coming up.)
I'm a big fan of drawing things out on paper, so if you do plan to add garden areas later it's a good idea to draw them out now so you know. In terms of the grass, I would also do aeration in the fall to help the dirt breathe a little. And, remember to make sure it's graded properly so it slopes away from your house. Good luck!
