cosmos plants

Wellington, OH

Hi, I was wondering why my cosmos are about 5 feet tall and healthy looking but not flowering. I did use our old cow manure, maybe too much nitrogen? I planted them from a cheap seed pack that I bought at walmart. Maybe that's why? what if I trim the top off, will the sides develop flowers? Everyone else's cosmos is blooming by now. Can anyone give me any ideas? Thanks!!

2 ladies on the NE forum have those huge ones.... they are up to 8' and 10' with no blooms yet either must be the wacky weather

I definitely wouldn't trim them--early in the season you can pinch things to keep them more compact, but pinching/trimming this late in the season will delay your blooms and since they're already running late that would not be a good thing.

Too much nitrogen can definitely stimulate a lot of green growth at the expense of blooms, so if you used too much compost or if it wasn't fully composted yet then that could be a reason why they're not blooming. One other thought would be when you started the seeds--if you waited too long past the ideal planting date that would also make them late to bloom. Or if they're not getting enough sun that would be another possibility.

I have one in a Wisc flower bed that is almost 5' tall and has yet to bloom. It's the Sensation variety. I have seen many in the area that has been blooming like mad, but not this one.

I love Cosmos.

Thank you all for your helpful answers. I came to the conclusion that the ones that still aren't blooming and are 6' tall just aren't getting enough sun. The others in 100% sun are finally blooming. Hooray. I love these forums! Thanks for the incite!!!!!

I also love these forums. now i know i am not the only one that was waiting for blooms
