I have Annabell Hydrangea which I would like to move. When can I move them and are they difficult to dig up?
Thanks
Hydrangea Transplant?
In your zone spring is probably the best time if you're able to wait until then. As far as whether they're difficult to dig up or not--it depends on how big & well established it is. If it's been in the ground for a number of years then it'll be harder to dig up than if it was planted more recently. The key to a successful move will be digging up as much of the rootball as you can--the more of its roots make the move with it the less stressful it'll be for the plant. Also don't be surprised if it doesn't bloom the year that you move it--it'll need time to get its roots going and get established again before it'll be able to put energy into flowers.
Someone told me FALL was the best time to move them. Now I'm confused....
I think it will depend on a couple of things... date of your first hard freeze in the fall and exactly how harsh your winter is (your zone, basically)
I like to transplant shrubs and trees in the fall because their roots will grow in before the hot spring and summer comes. But (here in zone 7b) we have a relatively mild winter and a hot spring/ summer. Transplanting or planting new trees in the spring is harder for me, and it is a constant battle of watering through the entire first summer.
If you have "enough" time to let the roots get established (before it freezes down to root level) you might be safe in transplanting now in Aug. And mulch really well through the winter (judithal)
Thanks for the help with transplanting hydrangeas. I am in zone 3A so our winters can be brutal. I think I will try to get in their 'new home' this month. Thanks again all.
I moved my endless summer in early spring and it has done well. I added a root stimulator into the soil to help get the roots going. Good luck!
