Planting Potted Goldsturm Daisies - Some Questions

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

A friend gifted me recently with a big pot of Goldsturm Daisies. There is no way for me to get them in the ground anytime soon (triple digit heat, plus ground so awful there's a lot of pickaxing and rock removal required before anything can be put in the ground). It's backbreaking work to plant anything in my yard even without the added summer heat.

So, a couple of questions. If I don't get these into the ground until the fall, will they have enough time to establish good roots so they come back in the spring? Or would it be best to leave them in their pot, and plant in the ground next spring? Will they even survive for the better part of
the next year if I leave them in their pot?

Another problem I have, is that they are currently horribly "pot bound". When I've tried watering them, the water just runs off the top of the dirt
and drips over the side of the pot. The dirt on top feels solid like a brick! I've put the whole thing inside a bucket I half filled with water, and
the plants are taking up water from the holes in the bottom of the pot. Need to repot these at the very least. Will they survive repotting at
this time of year, and in this kind of heat?

If they're that potbound then I would definitely repot them--just keep them somewhere that gets some shade right after repotting. It's the combination of heat + direct sun beating down on them that really stresses newly transplanted/repotted plants, so if you can give them some shade then the heat shouldn't bother them too much. I also think fall planting in your garden will be fine--no reason why you'd need to wait until spring.

Thanks for the tip on giving them some shade right after repotting, I honestly thought if I repotted them, I could just put them
right back onto my full-sun deck. Definitely won't make that mistake now! Thanks too for confirming they will be OK if they're
planted in the garden in the fall. They have such beautiful flowers, definitely want to make sure I do as much "right" with planting these as possible.
