Bell Peppers - Can Green Peppers Turn Red?

Columbus, OH

I have 3 Bell Peppers that are taking forever to ripen. I had what I thought was a green pepper turn blackish-brown and then red. The other 2 peppers are still green. Will they turn red as well? Can you have different colored bell-peppers on the same vine?

Almost all bell peppers are either yellow , orange or red when ripe. Even the ones which are purple or other colors when immature. There are several green when ripe varieties but they are rare. In your case you have a red bell pepper which is ripe. Traditionally most folks prefered the green immature bells, but ripe bells are fast growing in popularity.

Thanks Farmerdill! I guess I've never let them ripen before...I may need to harvest this tonight for dinner!

I find the "ripe" ones to be much sweeter in flavor than the ones picked when green -- but leaving the peppers on the plant to mature will likely cause fewer new ones to grow on that plant, so I usually pick the first peppers green and then let later ones mature.

I can eat ripe, red bell peppers like apples!
