I can't tell you why you aren't supposed to do the water bath on the ceramic stove top, and I did do it last year, but it says not to do it.
Edibles '10 - Part 3
google to the rescue.. mine is flat and fits on my largest burner.. guess that's why I didn't see a problem
http://www.pickyourown.org/cannings4glasstop.htm
the black and white speckled pot looks exactly like mine... and hey I have a couple of turkey firers around... LOL
Well that certainly explains it, thanks.
Yes, thanks so much for that info......I have actually used a stock pot for my canning, but it only holds pint jars......but that's all I'm doing now anyway......
Allison - thanks for that great information! Now I understand it. I guess I'm lucky I didn't crack my stove top!
Just pulled the a grape pie out of the oven, will let you know how it tastes....it better be REALLY good because it was a real pain separating the seeds from the pulp.
oh my goodness.. hope the work was worth it!!!
Sounds terrific!
canned 7 more jars of t's last night - was even able to collect enough roma's to can 3 jars - out of the 3 cases i have canned only 2 other jars were roma's - seems my weeders (in-laws) have only been taking roma's and not any of the brandywine's
we had dinner with them over the weekend and i asked them if they wanted any canned roma's this winter - they said they would LOVE some - so i asked that they take a few BW's instead of all the roma's - it is not like we don't have a lot plants - we have 24 plants each - i would see a big batch getting close to ripe and puff! - gone - i should start a tomato hoarding reality show :)
You keep me laughing Bill!!
Louise, Cindy did not think i was funny, thinks i should just let them take what they want, that i am stingy. i hav a hard time thinking i'm stingy when they are taking all the roma's :)
Don't get Italians mad!
My family just wanders in the garden & take anything they see....I'm now paying my son back, by sneaking out many of his tomatoes......
Wow....The Garden Wars........yikes......families are something, huh? Good think we charge admission to our garden, I guess.
Well don't let them take what they want, give them the jars you want them to have
not garden wars at all - just had to clue them into letting us have some roma's - they probably thought we were getting some seeing as if the garden is here.
Have dug some giant carrots....will cook them with tonight's brisket.....I've also found some good recipes for carrot soup.....
need to check our carrots?
Came home to a jungle in the veggie garden, again. No one picked or used anything while we were gone. Their loss! I pulled about 1/2 bushel of red beets and canned them and started on a bushel of green beans that needed picked. I canned 4 quarts of beans for my dad, since I can't take him frozen. I blanch and freeze ours, much better taste I think. I still have a flat of tomatoes to put away and some new potatoes to dry and store. My potatoes didn't do real well since I was at my dad's when I should have been adding compost and straw to them. There's always next year. We leave again next Tuesday for 18-19 days, then it will be coming home to putting everything to bed for the winter. I need to vacation in the southern hemisphere so I can go to the beach when there's snow on the gardens. LOL Ric
Hee hee!
oh crud... when do I dig the potatoes... forgot about them
Yes, I did tell them. Allison, you can raise your taters any time after the vines die back. Spread them in a dark ventilated area to dry and toughen the skin a bit before storing them. My GF used to put his on the garage floor with a couple of layers of news paper over them. Ric
completely dead??... or just dying?
If they have yellowed and lost their vigor, go ahead. If you leave them too long they can try and start new growth. Ric
oh boy... might be too long already.. guess I know what I am doing sunday
I started digging my hands in the potato bed and darn, I grow big worms - potatoes - not so much.
LOL!! Worms mean you have great soil!!
Shouid be - they had a lot of potatoes to eat! LOL See you tomorrow!
Glad you have all that produce still, Ric.....carrots & beets, and a new crop of lettuce is about it in my garden....Memory, that was very funny!
LOL Memory! We'll miss you and Holly tomorrow Ric! Enjoy the next leg of your travels!
oh noooo Memory.. too bad I had to work yesterday I could have dug some of mine for you
Allison, We didn't have many potatoes this year but we did great with them last year.
Ric made ham with green beans and potatoes from the garden yesterday. Yummy!
We still have tomatoes and got a few small pumpkins, there was a nice large one but it was early and already gone.
Holly
Holly it was like opening an empty Christmas present ... just pouting
