Edibles '10 - Part 3

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Anyone eating potatoes yet? I SO want to stick my hand down in to see if mine are ready but it's been raining and I might touch a heebiejeebie worm (eeeew) I figure if any of yours are ready I can pull a plant ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I get in trouble when I stick my hand down in to see if mine is ready.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ha ha ha!! I bet you do!!!

D-Nut, DH and I were just talking about checking the ones from spuds....the ones from seed we will let go a bit longer. Did you use seeds?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Pixie I used spuds and both Norland and Pacific Russet are supposed to be early. Victor you should not be allowed to grow veggies.

Thomaston, CT

Definitely not potatoes!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Holy Moley do I have tomatoes! Looks like I'll be making sauce on Wednesday!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

am I jealous... mine didn't do well at all this year.. lots of grapes & cherries... not too many biggins

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

made a salad yesterday with my toms and cukes.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - not a great year for maters here either.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I picked 3 huge cukes today... and had to fight to get the cherries in the house... slung in my shirt... the girls were attacking me... Jily & Lily both love toms

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

a lot of mine are splitting Victor... was so bummed

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

pretty much only grape and cherry toms here too

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I don't feel so bad then... at least I am not alone

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have matos coming out my nose! Beef Steak, Fourth of July's, Romma's and Spoon's!
Gave away 2 huge kettles full already.........

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

My cukes are done - except for a couple of hidden ones that now look like fat melons. It looks like we may not have enough grapes to make jelly this year......but it's better than last year when we had zero! The cold snap got them last year. They have a long way to go this year, and there aren't nearly the number we have had in good years.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

lots of t's here too only mine are mostly still green

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I have lots of toms but they are little and green. Only the cherries are ripe now. Not enough heat this summer :(

Thomaston, CT

Accck! If you want heat, come to New England.....I think today is our 32nd day over 90.....of course, I'll be crying in January when it's zero. One cuke vine is still alive, and has a few little ones......lots of beets & carrots. Think I'll make gazpacho for lunch today.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

ARGH! I checked and finally pulled one plant. Only 3 (THREE!) golf ball sized taters at the bottom. My new theory is that the plant is defective and the other healthy non-defective plants will be laden. That's my story and I'm stickin to it (and I'm not looking again for a looooooong time). Pixie did you check?

I will NEVER do what I did with tomats again. (yeah Ive said it 2 or 3 years now). I got 32 plants. My goal is to can salsa and tomats.

Do a few big boys and the rest ROMAS! Romas are so easy to can and work with.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

My romas are never getting soft like the other tomatoes. They get red - but not soft - is that how they are? I just mixed them with canned tomatoes for sauce and it was OK but I still don't feel like they were really ripe.

Romas have less juice and are more meaty

Also you just cut the stem end of and sqeeze them and poof - they fly outta the skin when sticking them in boiling water. You know the canning process.

They were SO easy to skin and meaty! I swear I have 20 pounds at least from 6 plants. I like them better than my San Marzanos! All my small tomatoes have "asploded" but the Romas are hanging in there.

Thomaston, CT

They never get very soft.....the gazpacho I made was yummy.....have enough for a few more days.

Well I was reading the directions for beans and it said boil for 2 minutes. WOW so I Decided to make Chilli.

I am the biggest bone head east of the Mississippi. I didnt read after you let them set for an hour they have to be boiled for another hour to an hour and 1/2 on a stinking hot day!

Thomaston, CT

Whoa....too hot to cook today.....I have some Amy's Organic frozen stuff I'm zapping.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Picked up a chicken at the supermarket. Making more chard!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Salad from the goods I sowed and reaped, sweet potato and T-bone steaks w/A-1 on the grill. :)

Thomaston, CT

The frozen veggie loaf was fair....guess I'll stick to the Indian dishes.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I think the edibles thread turned into what's for dinner

Thomaston, CT

True....but I did make a salad from my son's tomatoes!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

we canned our first 6 jars of t's last night - more to go tonight as we ran out of lids - which was ok - standing and peeling and deseeding t's is rough on the neck!

Thomaston, CT

Canning is rough....I'm done for the year.....

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

t's are coming in late this year - will have a few weeks of it in front of me.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I made some yummy salsa today for some company coming tomorrow night. I had to wing it a bit for ingredients, but it was yummy. Just don't ask me how I made it! I didn't use a recipe and couldn't recreate it exactly if I tried! lol
