Morning Glories

Howard City, MI(Zone 5b)

What is the trick to growing morning glories and getting them to properly climb? They are climbing up my deck railings, but don't seem to flower.

(Zone 7a)

Mine are just now beginning to flower. They take a little while to get going.

poor soil for blooms!!!

Morning glories bloom at different times. I have some early bloomers start in July and some other types don't bloom until end of august.
You can start them by winter sowing I just put a bunch of seeds in a large pot spinkle with an inch of dirt on top to discourage birds eating them placed next to a deck pole and tied when the plant it got long enough. I save the seeds each year and replant I have been doing this for a few years now.

Morning Glories generally like phosphorus and magnesium bith of which are bloom stimulating although high nitrogen levels may delay flowering...

The Japanese have a special place for Morning Glories for about a thousand years and they fertilize their Morning glories with phosphorus and magnesium...they are called asagao in Japanese romaji...

Poor soil is a fuzzy term...poor in what (?)...

There are many different species and cultivars of Morning Glories and each may exhibit different characteristics and have differing requirements...

How much sun do you give them? The vines flower more if given more sun during the day. Hot afternoon sun is not welcomed by the Japanese MG varieties.
