Tomato leaves all curled up

Pulaski, GA

I have 4 pineapple tomato plants. They are big and the leaves are a healthy green color but the leaves are all curled up. Why is this? I know we have acidic soil and I didn't lime this year. Could that be the reason? Also, I have no tomatoes, just large plants. The sun is merciless and we've had little rain. I have to run the sprinkler pretty often. What is wrong with my tomato plants?

It sounds like too much fertilizer.

With such strong healthy leaf growth and excessively hot temperatures, too much fertilizer is a strong possibility -- especially if you've been using 10-10-10 rather than a balanced tomato fertilizer that has higher phosphorus and potassium. This may help! http://www.tomatodirt.com/tomato-fertilizer-kinds.html

High temperatures over a sustained period also lead to blossom drop, which may be a reason why you haven't produced fruit. Here's more info: http://www.tomatodirt.com/blossom-drop.html

RE: leaf curling. Have you applied an herbicide anywhere in the vicinity or even elsewhere on your property? Curling leaves are one symptom of an herbicide injury. Look for leaves that are bending down and cupped. The cure is time and TLC.

Hope this helps!

My tomatoes are doing the same thing. I have 4 plants in containers, 2 cherry and 2 beefsteak, with exact same soil/fertilizer setup (i used a 10-10-10 organic fert). The cherries do not have curly leaves, and are producing like crazy now, and I have been pulling 5 or 6 off a day. The beefsteak are considerable smaller in size (plant-wise) and have the curled leaves, though they curl up and into the middle of the leaf from the sides, almost looking like a hot dog bun. They only grew a few tomatoes each to just under the size of a baseball, and they have been green and and not growing for almost three weeks. Yesterday i just noticed a couple starting to turn orange, and finally there are some new blossoms growing. Also, the new leaves that grow are not curling. Seems bizarre, but as long as they start to grow i'll be happy.

Thanks, KathyWid, for the information and website. Is it too late to do anything that will result in tomatoes? I just feel helpless watching those 4 plants sit out there in the sun and produce nothing.

To the people who say tomatoes are easy to grow, I say, "What planet are you on?"
