Gray Hairstreak. I had TWO of them today. They are so adorable. Okay, I know, I say that they all are. and they are.
DAILY BUTTERFLIES Page 80
I am having a lul (sp) right now. Last remaining Queen died. No cats on the plants except four on milkweed that seem to have been there forever. I have one large GST and two babies inside on Rue. Withdrawals here.....wish this heat would break. I would love to have some rain.
Nice to see some flowers, butterflies and cats from my friends ....looking good ev1!!
I was so excited. I saw my very first buckeye here yesterday. Didn't have my camera handy though. I would have never known what it was if it were not for all the nice pictures I have been looking at on this forum. Thanks everyone for posting. I sure have learned a lot.
We all learn from each other if we want to....DG is an awsome site.
It is such a bummer to lose them. Maybe something on the parsley??
My last monarch egg hatched last weekend but was not growing much. I found it dead this morning. Stil have 5 going.
However the one is in his "J" now. I really hope to see it make its chrysalis!
YAY...hemlady! I just have bunches of buckeyes right now!
The Apricot Profusion Zinnia seems to be the most popular...I have orange and white ones too.
Mrs_ED.....when you buy parsley from a nursery sometimes they have sprayed with pesticides to keep the plants from being eat up. Might remove those cats and not use them until you wash with soapy water and they set a few days.
Mrs. Ed, It's Hoya carnosa.....sometimes called Wax flower

Hoya is a seasonal favorite out here too. Can't remember which species it is but I have one in a hanging basket on my shaded back porch - it is extremely fragrant - a very pleasant aroma fills my back porch and the longtail skippers are always all over it.

well no wonder it looks fake if it's called WAX flower!
I think I'm going to have to get a greenhouse so I can grow all these things!!!
Ya know...there is a forum dedicated to hoyas on Dave's.
There are gobs and gobs of varieties!!!
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/hoya/all/
I have one plant that I think is a hoya but I keep it inside with African Violets. I need to get it IDd and see if I can place it outdoors...
Yours are pretty.
We grow all ours outside as soon as we are past our frost date and don't bring most of them in until we are due for a hard frost or freeze. We have a couple that we bring in if it's supposed to go below 50.
Sorry about the cats dying....I do feel your pain.
My first one attched to a branch I have in the container....yesterday while I was moving it the chrysalis dropped off the branch. I reattached it with thread. Now I wonder if it fell off because something was wrong with it so it not viable or could that have damaged the developing butterfly?
I kind of knew monarchs would be tougher than the BST....
I wonder if you have OE.
If it is any consolation, i killed all but one of those black swallowtails with that new parsley. :(
If it is a plastic container it is easy to scrape the silk enough to get a pin through. I quit using the sticks because of the difficulty in removing the chrysalis and having enough silk to work with. I doubt you damaged the pupa if the chrysalis was hardened unless it was dropped to the floor. They basically turn to liquid inside and the bf dna takes over. If it was not viable it wouldn't cause it to fall I don't think.
Usually when one has been parasitized it will begin turning dark a day or two later and appear sunken.
So Mrs_ED...do you think it was pesticide on the new parsley?
I'm assuming, shelia. One pupated, it was the oldest one. But I lost all the rest.
Sugarfoot brought me four Border Patch to raise and a whole lot of GFs that I turned loose on my passion vine. Three of the four BPs pupated the next day and the fourth looks like it may not be far behind. I will be excited to have them emerge. I haven't gotten to raise them in the past.
The chrysalis was hard and it just fell to the bottom of the container. It looks okay today. You are right there was no silk to work with! Will make a note not to use a branch next year with monarchs.
My 80 year old neighbor just finds this all so interesting. I was showing her all the BST cats today on the fennel and she thought the monarch chrysalis is very pretty!
Nanny, it is great that you can share that with her. Even me at 63 never had anything like this visual in science classrooms. I had never seen a monarch caterpillar until I started being active on DG! It has opened up a whole new world for me, and I pass on the knowldege whenever I can.
Oh, that's so nice that you released it there.
I have good news. The bronze fennel is loaded with cats. I counted about 17. I'm thinking what to do about this. Scrub out the cage I guess and bring a few in? Or maybe just cover the whole plant. What do they do when they are ready to pupate?
Speaking of cats, Here's that clearwing hummingbird moth cat. It's itsee bitsee right now.
