Both of my daughters are raising Monarchs. Right now they are using plastic bowls for the cats that aren't really large enough in my opinion. What does everyone here use??? Do you use special butterfly houses?? Or do you just go to the pet store and get one of those plastic type cages with the vented lids??? I would appreciate some info please. Thanks.

I am going right now to look at the sticky thread because I noticed it has some ideas on cages there.

Marna....I would protect them one way or another. If you cover the bush, there can't be more eggs laid though.

Sorry cross posted with you.

Thanks to you both!!!!

Hemlady, I use 20 Quart plastic storage totes I get at Walmart.

I moved the last 2 BST cat from the potted fennel to the one in the flower bed yesterday. As I was doing that a female was laying more eggs! I cut the potted one down as there was not much left of it anyways.

I would just let nature takes its course at this late date Mrs Ed. They seem to grow much faster outside.

My second monarch made its chrysalis yesterday evening...during dinner again!! So I missed most it but did get to see a little of the process. It wasn't quite done when I got this pic of it.

mjs - Looks like a Horace's Duskywing indeed. I checked the BAMONA site for your county and that was the closest match. We get several duskywing species here...very confusing!!!

Is that last photo a Silver Spotted Skipper?

We don't get that one down here.

ah ha ! Cat your are right on the Silver Spotted Skipper..........
the Horace was a bit deceiving as it looked a bit off color but the markings were right.

Here's another,
Argos Skipper ? or firey ? ...( I'm trying to id butterflies and work at the same time...) guess who's winning !!
