Cutting back peonies

I'm wondering if I can cut back my peony bushes now that they are turning quite ugly. I know I heard that you leave them alone so they will feed themselves but wondered how long you have to do this. Thanks!

If the leaves are brown and the stems are brittle then cut them back. Make sure you clean up all debris as it helps with avoiding some problems.
