It looks healthy, chuckle, but I think you are holding it upside down. the tubers prob ought to point down, does it have a smell if you take a whiff of it?

Looks like a rather confused carrot. There are red-skinned carrot cultivars (and the one odd one just turns out that way, besides). Branching of roots that are normally single happens when the root runs into an obstacle, say in rocky soil... or so I've read that this is the cause of this common occurrence. Does it smell/taste/look in cross-section like a carrot?

it doesnt resemble anything I have ever grown for food, unless it is a carrot that grew together, , but that wouldnt explain why it was given as a swap, chuckle, not sweet potato, not any form of beet,, nor vine tuber I can put a memory to, hmmm, New Jersey the Garden State, will have to look around. Good luck

Most "Root" vegetables will show those symptoms if planted in soil too rich in fresh organic fertiliser or as stated above by not having a straight root run.

Can you contact the person you got it from? Since this was a veggie trade I expect they have some general idea of what it was that they sent you.

Why don't you plant it to find out? Who knows, when the leaves develop it would turn out to be a common vegetable we know. It could be a vegetable we recognize only by the leaves and not by the root or tuber it is planted with.

It looks like an alien to me! LOL!

Hope that helps!

Is there any chance that it's rhubarb? It's been a few years since I've seen the underside of mine - but sure nuff do look like what I remember.

Rochester, NY(Zone 6a)

Looks like the roots of a rhubarb plant being held upside down. :)

Gainesville, FL(Zone 8a)

Looks like a misshapen "purple haze" carrot. They appear more red than purple

Arlington, VA

Strange looking plant indeed.
I hope you put eyes on it and placed it in your window for Halloween. My first reaction to it is
"it's aliiive! it's aliive!"

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

So uh... you got it in a veggie trade... what's it taste like?

Marysville, OH(Zone 5b)

AceMoose - that was exactly my first reaction! It's probably going to grow into some alien pod plant or something.

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

A root is a root could be a tree as much as I know Lol. Plant it and let us know, What the hey can't hurt.:.)

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Oh, man, that's awesome. It does look like a carrot. Carrot roots split when it's planted in too much of a certain nutrient. It still will taste good!
