Total Vegetation Killer to "Start Over"?

LA/Orange County, CA(Zone 10a)

I know it sounds evil to try this, but our property manager ripped out everything from our overgrown yard (we just moved in)- everything but the roots that is, and had grass seed and manure scattered on top. New grass is growing but so are spider plants, weeds, crabgrass , baby trees, bamboo, rosebushes and who knows what else?! The new grass will not last long among all this.

A friend told me to get a total vegetation killer that works in hours and you can replant within 72 hours. He said it will even kill the roots so when we replant it won't be a problem. I looked up Spectracide Total Weed & Grass Killer and it says that it will do this. I hate to poison everything but it's either that or several weeks of trying to dig up everything, which I just don't have time or energy to do with my 2 kids and full time job.

I just wanted input on whether this will work or if it's a truly horrible idea? we tried some weed killer that doesn't kill grass and it just hasn't worked.

I don't know if you can replant in 72 hrs. How big is the area? You can try to do a lasagna garden http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1030412/
but any larger weeds you'll probably have to pull by hand.

Hey Flowerjen-
Thanks for the idea! I will definitely do this in the area in my backyard I plan to use as a vegetable garden- we've been pulling the big stuff out of there, but were worried about the roots- I'll try the lasagne gardening idea there. For the lawn though, I think we're going to have to take more drastic measures- it's unbelievable how out of control it has gotten since we moved in just a month ago! I have vegetables in square foot garden planter boxes now so I have a lot of stuff I keep thinking I should compost, but this works better for me than a compost heap- just add as you go
